Boston Celtics All-Star Kemba Walker is a “big question” heading into the NBA restart in late July down in Orlando.

While Jayson Tatum is getting all the hype as the driving force behind the Boston Celtics championship engine heading into the restart of the 2019-2020 NBA season, Kemba Walker is still a major factor in how deep a run the team actually makes.

After signing with the Celtics, one of the big questions surrounding the addition of Walker was whether both Tatum and Jaylen Brown could make big leaps.

With that question being an astounding yes, the team has transcended from just a playoff contender to at least an Eastern Conference finals contender as long as health is on their side.

More from Chowder and Champions

During the majority of the 2019-2020 season, the Boston Celtics have barely had their big four on the court at the same time as Brown and Gordon Hayward have spent time healing from injuries and so has Walker, which is why ESPN’s Tim Bontemps labeled the sharp-shooting guard as the Celtics’ biggest question ahead of the restart of the season.

He believes a healthy Kemba Walker can take the Boston Celtics a long way.

"“Walker was nowhere near himself in the weeks leading up to the shutdown in March, thanks to lingering knee issues,” Bontemps wrote in his ESPN column, via NESN.  “His play particularly dipped after the All-Star Game, as he repeatedly posted poor shooting nights and failed to play with his usual burst.  The Celtics were thrilled by Jayson Tatum’s star turn, and they like the balanced offensive attack they have with Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward on the wing, but Walker needs to play like an All-Star if this team is going to have a chance to make it out of the East.”"

As the long layoff has allowed Walker’s left knee to heal, there is still some concern there as the NBA returns to play in late July considering how much knee problems lingered just prior to the shutdown.

What the Boston Celtics need from Kemba Walker

With a healthy Kemba Walker, we know the Boston Celtics has the best starting five in the league with four All-Star worthy players in Walker, Jayson Tatum, Jaylen Brown and Gordon Hayward.  Along with the solid play of Daniel Theis in the middle, they have a starting five that can compete with the top teams in the league.

What the emergence of Tatum allows less pressure on Kemba as a primary scorer.  A role he will certainly embrace, Walker can become a secondary scoring option who is capable of taking over a game when he catches fire.

Boston Celtics fans have certainly seen that prior to the All-Star Game and the team will need that Kemba Walker to have a chance to shoot by a team like the Milwaukee Bucks to reach the NBA finals.

Depending on what the team can get from Gordon Hayward, who also has his own battle with injuries to overcome, Walker’s scoring along with his leadership will be even more of a key to make dreams happen down in Disney.

With all players healthy and committed to the restart, the Boston Celtics had good odds to compete for a championship.
