The Boston Red Sox dropped their fourth straight loss with a 17-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays Thursday signaling a team that has hit rock bottom.

The expectations weren’t high for the Boston Red Sox entering this modified 60-game MLB season, but there was a glimpse of hope that they would at least compete for the playoffs.

With unknown commodities thrown in the starting rotation, stars like J.D. Martinez and Andrew Benintendi struggling at the plate and just sloppy play all around, the 2020 Red Sox are quickly becoming a team fans would like to forget as they dropped to 6-13 on the season following a staggering and embarrassing 17-8 loss to the Tampa Bay Rays at Fenway Park.

Actually, that 6-13 record seems better than the Red Sox have played all season.  If it wasn’t for inspired play by a few players such as Kevin Pillar, Alex Verdugo and veteran starter Martin Perez, these games wouldn’t even be worth watching.

More from Chowder and Champions

In fact, the four-game sweep at the hands of the Rays may have even further inspired the Red Sox front office to make more moves similar to that of Mookie Betts.

Prior to the 17-8 loss, Red Sox president and CEO Sam Kennedy admitted the organization has already had trade discussions with other teams with the trade deadline now just weeks away.

"“Chaim (Bloom), Brian O’Halloran, Raquel (Ferreira) and Eddie (Romero) have been already engaged with team,” Kennedy said during an appearance on The Greg Hill Show, via WEEI.  “Teams are trying to position themselves for a postseason run here.  We have to get going.  Look, we know we’re 6-12.  It’s been an awful start.  No one is proud of it.  Frustrating.  But, at the same time, you can run off three or four wins and all of a sudden you’re two or three games back in the American League East and anything can happen.”"

While he went on to say that the team is not giving up on the season, he basically contradicts himself later on by saying that no one on the team is “untouchable” if the team feels it needs to go in the direction of re-tooling or restructuring for the future.

Sounds very much like the team is waving the white flag.  If not in the front office, they definitely are on the field giving the Rays no competition through their latest losing streak.

Boston Red Sox need to break it all up

With their stars struggling and frustrated, along with a manager in Ron Roenicke who doesn’t seem to know how to get through to his team, the 2020 Boston Red Sox are a team that has hit rock bottom and it appears to be time to break it all up.

Whether it’s J.D. Martinez, Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Andrew Benintendi or Jackie Bradley Jr., the Red Sox brass has to consider moving any of those players for better pitching prospects to start.

Except for Martinez, the players mentioned above can be part of the future, but if the Red Sox get blown away with a deal they can’t resist, they would have to consider moving a Bogaerts, Devers and especially a struggling Benintendi who looks as though he needs a change of scenery to reach his potential.

Now, the Boston Red Sox needing to make moves and trusting the moves they make are two different stories.

Can fans really trust a front office that didn’t get enough back for one of the best players in the game to make a winnable trade?

Well, the jury is still out on Chaim Bloom.

For now, there is a team with not much hope on the field heading into the Bronx to face the New York Yankees.  If Xander Bogaerts, J.D. Martinez and crew can show some signs of life in this series, we will talk.

If these Ron Roenicke Boston Red Sox get swept, break it up…trade everybody.
