Boston Red Sox shellacked by Yankees again: ‘Yeah, it sucks’
Nathan Eovaldi couldn’t stop the bleeding as the Boston Red Sox lost their sixth straight game with a 11-5 loss to the New York Yankees.
Remember when it was fun to chant “Yankees suck!”. Well, the team sucking big time right now are the Boston Red Sox.
In an 11-5 loss to the New York Yankees Saturday night, the Red Sox lost their sixth consecutive loss to drop their record to 6-15, which is the worst record in the American League.
To add insult to injury, the team’s most consistent starting pitcher, Nathan Eovaldi, was shellacked by the Yankees. The hard-throwing righty gave up eight runs on nine hits and allowed the Bronx Bombers to launch three homers off him.
It just wasn’t a good look, especially since Xander Bogaerts gave him a 3-2 lead to work with in the third inning with a solo shot into the stands.
With how Nathan Eovaldi has been pitching this season, that would’ve been enough to at least keep the Red Sox competitive.
But, the inconsistent version of Eovaldi was on the mound Saturday night and allowed the Yankees to answered right back, giving up home runs to Gary Sanchez and a three-run knockout punch by Clint Frazier.
There will be nights like this is baseball for any Major League pitcher, but it wasn’t good timing for a Red Sox team desperate to stop the bleeding. A team that is relying on a pitcher like Eovaldi more than they envisioned they would.

"“The first inning, I gave up a two-run homer to [Gio] Urshela,” Eovaldi said, via MLB.com. “We answered back, got back in the lead, and again, I got hurt by the long ball tonight. It’s extremely frustrating for sure.”"
Outscored 63-30 during this abysmal losing streak, the Boston Red Sox just aren’t having fun. Sorry Xander Bogaerts, they just aren’t. The starting pitching is a joke with their most reliable starters being pitchers in Eovaldi and Martin Perez who would be third or fourth in the rotation if this was another year.
Defensively, the Red Sox continue to make mental mistakes all over the field and that potent offense only shows up sporadically. It just doesn’t feel like there is hope, which doesn’t feel good for a veteran player like J.D. Martinez.
"“Yeah, it sucks,” Martinez said following the game. “It’s definitely not fun. It’s not fun going out there and getting your head beat in every day.”"
The Boston Red Sox simply have to play better
Has the Boston Red Sox already mailed it in?
A 6-15 record in a 60-game season is not ideal. If the losing continues, a few big names could find themselves playing elsewhere by the time MLB Trade Deadline comes in goes. One of those players is J.D. Martinez, who has so far not been the offensive force the team really needed in the lineup.
Other players like Xander Bogaerts, Rafael Devers, Alex Verdugo and Andrew Benintendi all have the capability of ignited the offense and carrying it for a while.
But, if offensive production was the only problem, the Red Sox would be in a lot better shape. The problem is overall baseball. They are just not getting it done and Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke seems to have to solutions except stating the obvious.
"“We need to just start playing good baseball,” Roenicke said. “We’re not playing good baseball. We’re lacking in something it seems like every day. Maybe we don’t play good defense one day, maybe we don’t hit another day or we don’t pitch, so we need to start playing good baseball and I think the wins will start coming, but until we do that, it’s going to be tough.”"
Until they start playing better, a team like the New York Yankees are able to beat them with their best players sitting on the bench. Ouch…the Boston Red Sox have really fallen this far. Yeah, if definitely sucks.
