Boston Red Sox drop 7th straight: The big hits just aren’t coming
The Boston Red Sox lost their seventh straight game Sunday night with a 4-2 loss to the New York Yankees in the Bronx.
The Boston Red Sox will win another baseball game this season. I promise.
It doesn’t seem so right now. On Sunday night, the Red Sox saw their current losing streak reach seven games after a 4-2 loss to J.A. Happ and the New York Yankees Sunday night.
Although it was at least a competitive game, one trend continued with the starting pitching. Chris Mazza, making his first big league start, put the team in an early 4-1 hole giving up eight hits and four runs over three innings.

The bullpen did pick him up, but only Kevin Pillar was able to get to Happ and the Yankees bullpen the rest of the way with a solo homer in the top of the third.
Other than that, the offense was silent once again as the team’s overall record dropped to 6-16. In losing all six games to the AL East rivals this season, the Boston Red Sox just can’t put together a complete team effort to get over that hurdle.
While the pitching talent is just not there, as the team is still searching to find some consistency other than Nathan Eovaldi and Martin Perez, the offensive talent is there. With big bats like J.D. Martinez and Rafael Devers struggling, the frustration just continues to mount for the team and manager Ron Roenicke, who watches his team find another way to lose on a nightly basis.
"“Still can’t get that big hit that we need,” Roenicke said, via MLB.com. “We didn’t swing the bat that well and then, when we have some guys on and we can’t get that big one that’ll bust it out. I know [Xander Bogaerts] hit that bullet up the middle that deflected off the glove. That would have been nice to have that one, but other than that we’re still not clicking and running those hits together.”"
If the offense catches fire, the wins should start to come even if they have to out-slug other teams.
The Boston Red Sox do have some leaders rallying for a turnaround
Boston Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke just isn’t getting through to this team, so it’s up to the veteran players to get this team out of the slump.
One of those players who have been vocal in the clubhouse and producing on the field is veteran outfielder Kevin Pillar.
While players like Xander Bogaerts have been vocalizing the team needs to have more fun, Pillar has been evoking that the team needs some energy to turn things on around.
According to the veteran outfielder, leaders on the team called a meeting to discuss the team’s current woes prior to Sunday night’s game. Those discussions involved staying engaged and playing as a team during a tough stretch of losing.
"“We’re really just trying to make the best of a unique situation with the season,” Pillar said during his postgame video conference, as transcribed by NESN. “I know things aren’t going really well, we still have a ton of games left, and we got to stop feeling sorry for ourselves and come out every day. This one is tough, we were in the game.”"
With 40 games left, Kevin Pillar feels there is still time to turn things around. All it really takes is that big hit to get things rolling for the offense. The Boston Red Sox also have to find a couple of more starters who can be competitive on the mound on a consistent basis.
At this point, it may involve calling up a young prospect or two before they may be ready. That goes for the offense as well.
