New England Patriots: Why Adrian Peterson would be intriguing signing
By Sam Minton
Adrian Peterson was released by the Washington Football team and the New England Patriots could add some much needed depth by signing him.
Saturday was the day that NFL rosters had to get cut down to 53 players. A lot of teams had to make some tough decisions. Of course that means the New England Patriots could take advantage and turn someone else’s trash into their treasure.
One of the more surprising cuts was seeing Adrian Peterson released by Washington. Even at the age of 34, Peterson has consistently put up quality numbers.
Last season he ran for almost 900 yards and had five touchdowns. Especially for New England those are numbers that could win Peterson a starting job.
Peterson continues to be a powerful running back who can break off long runs. He has had an amazing career. All he needs is a Super Bowl to make things complete before he retires. Then he will be off to the Pro Football Hall of Fame.
Now New England could use a running back. Damien Harris, and Sony Michel are all dealing with or recovering from injuries. Their role for Week 1 very likely could be in a limited capacity.
That leaves Rex Burkhead and J.J. Taylor to handle most of the rushing duties. As much as I love these guys, that doesn’t exactly instill fear in opposing teams.
One would think that when Michel is healthy that they will get the majority of the carries. Having a guy like Peterson on the roster would ensure that you have a strong running game while allowing them to reach 100 percent.
Even once everyone is healthy, having a back such as Peterson is very valuable. He brings experience to help a team entering a new era and he still has some gas left in the tank.
Also it’s unlikely that Peterson would cost New England a lot of money. They could offer him the chance to win a Super Bowl even though Tom Brady is no longer on the team. This could get him to sign for less.
There’s no doubt that New England could use some help at running back, signing AP would seriously upgrade the position.
