New England Patriots quarterback Cam Newton says Patrick Mahomes is “changing the game” and also “empowering” him.

The New England Patriots have nothing to lose when they go to Arrowhead Stadium to face off against the 3-0 Kansas City Chiefs Sunday afternoon.

At 2-1, the Patriots are obvious underdogs in this game.  Although it’s not the Tom Brady vs. Patrick Mahomes showdown it has been the last two seasons, there is added excitement to this battle due to that addition of Cam Newton and what he brings to the Patriots’ offense.

Through the first three weeks of the season, Newton has looked like the quarterback he was in 2015 when he took home the NFL MVP honor and led the Carolina Panthers to the Super Bowl.

More from Chowder and Champions

With injuries being his roadblock to even more success in the NFL, the 31-year-old quarterback has a chip on his shoulder and is definitely tired of being humble.

In his ability to run the ball with his mobility and physicality as well as his ability to move the ball in the air, which he showcased with a 397 yards passing performance against the Seattle Seahawks in Week 2, Cam Newton is becoming the show in New England and once again reminding the NFL who he is.

As a veteran quarterback in the league, Newton was where Patrick Mahomes is today.  In speaking about the dynamic young Kansas City Chiefs quarterback, Newton referred to him as a quarterback changing the game with some old school influence.

"“It’s not like he’s just back there and it’s an arcade game,” Newton said, via ESPN’s Mike Reiss.  “Sometimes it looks like it, but he knows exactly what he’s doing and how he’s manipulating the defense.  That’s the same thing that the Dan Marinos used to do.  Obviously, the Tom Bradys.  The Arron Rodgers.  Those guys really have so much command of the offense that you dictate to the defense.  That’s what he’s doing.  He’s playing the game at a high level.”"

Cam Newton is on a business trip

Don’t get it twisted.  Cam Newton would love nothing more to go into Arrowhead Stadium and lead the New England Patriots to an upset victory over the Chiefs.  But, his admiration of Mahomes is more his appreciation of how the position is evolving, which actually started with him.

In recognizing that, Patrick Mahomes offered his own admiration of a player who took the NFL by storm in his own way and is starting to do it again under the guidance of Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels.  As a player who can do it all, there is one aspect of Cam Newton’s game that Mahomes wishes he had and it has something to do with size.

"“I wish I could do some of the things he does, as far as how physical he is, and the way he’s able to make plays happen.  He’s a great football player, someone I watched when he was at Auburn,” Mahomes said of the 6-foot-5, 245-pound Newton.  “He’s in a great spot now and he’s playing really good football.”"

Those comments flattered Newton who credited players empowering each other as reasons he play the game.  How will this mutual praise translate on the field?

Well, Cam Newton has shown he is a competitor and a motivator.  Watching what Patrick Mahomes and the Kansas City Chiefs do on offense will only inspired Newton and the New England Patriots offense to get it down as well.  They may not be as explosive, but that doesn’t mean they can’t be equally dynamic.

It’s all going to come down to execution and the single-handed firepower that is Cam Newton.
