Gilmore isn’t the only player that New England will be unable to re-sign. Joe Thuney will be another player who will get paid in free agency. It’s hard to see New England signing him after the season.

So the smart move for the Patriots would be to move on from Thuney now. Then they would at least be able to get something in return for the guard. They also would be able to open up some cap space that could help them acquire some young talent.

Unlike Gilmore, it’s hard to see Thuney commanding a first or second-round pick. If that ends up happening Patriots fans should feel great. The more likely scenario is that the Patriots end up getting some sort of mid-round pick. It might not seem like a lot, but something is better than nothing.

Unlike the cornerback position, New England’s offensive line could use some work. If Thuney was to be traded, the offense would continue to struggle. Then again it’s hard to think that they could get any worse.

So the Patriots have to trade Thuney. They need to start acquiring draft picks and assets while they still can or else they will be a mediocre team for a long time.
