With a 2-4 record, things don’t look great for the New England Patriots. The team is probably not worth a short term investment at this rate.

The New England Patriots stink. It’s not an issue that is magically going to fix itself with a good week of practice. This team will continue to lose and lose badly unless the roster is shaken up.

However, with a 2-4 record and a tough schedule in the back half of the season, is this team really worth spending draft capital on a player that will ultimately turn out to be a rental? My current inclination would be to say no. That time has passed, as they are riding a three game losing streak.

That doesn’t mean that the Patriots should shy away from acquiring assets at the deadline. It also doesn’t mean that they need to hold on to veterans who are not under contract long term, either.

More from Chowder and Champions

Here are four different trade ideas, two buying and two selling, that the Patriots should consider before the NFL’s November 3rd trade deadline.

Trade for Dallas Cowboys wide receiver Michael Gallup

The Dallas Cowboys are even worse than the New England Patriots are right now, which says a lot. One player in particular who was expected to make a big leap in Dallas was wide receiver Michael Gallup, but he has had a very quiet year.

Gallup is just 24-years-old and had a very good season in 2019, catching 66 passes for 1,107 yards and six touchdowns. He’s been mostly an afterthought this season for a struggling Cowboys team, averaging just under three receptions per game.

Obviously, the Cowboys offense took a huge hit with quarterback Dak Prescott being out for the season due to an ankle injury. However, even when Dak was on the field Gallup didn’t produce very much. With Dallas having taken CeeDee Lamb in the first round this year, Gallup’s phasing out doesn’t appear to be a coincidence. There are just more mouths to feed on that offense now.

Even though they are still in a winnable division, the Cowboys are not going to make a deep playoff run this season and it wouldn’t hurt them to trade someone like Gallup for draft capital.

Michael Gallup would instantly become the best receiver on New England’s offense. He has a very good blend of speed and physicality. He’s the type of player that Cam Newton can work very well with.

Gallup is still on his rookie deal and is under contract through the 2021 season. Given his lack of production so far, the Patriots shouldn’t have to offer more than a second round pick. It’s at least worth a shot, because Gallup would not only be helpful to Cam Newton but also to whoever the starting quarterback is next season as well.
