With the New England Patriots having one of their worst seasons in recent history, it’s time that they select their quarterback of the future.

There hasn’t been a lot of reasons for New England Patriots fans to get excited in 2020. With the team having an awful season, all fans can do is look towards the future. If New England is going to improve, that starts at the quarterback position.

The Patriots failed to plan for life after Tom Brady. Jarrett Stidham isn’t the answer at QB and Cam Newton isn’t a permanent solution. If New England wants to be successful once again they need to find a quarterback in the draft.

It’s honestly stunning how little New England prepared for the future during their impressive run. It’s clear that they don’t think highly of Stidham seeing they felt the need to sign Newton in the offseason.

Now there are some names that every football fan will have heard when it comes to the QB class of 2021. You have your Trevor Lawrence’s and Justin Fields of the world who will be selected well before New England makes their selection. Lawrence is pretty much a certainty to go No.1 overall.

But one quarterback has burst onto the scene during this weird college football season and he seems like he would be a perfect fit for the Patriots. Fans should be paying attention to what Zach Wilson is doing at BYU.

Wilson is having an amazing 2020 season. In eight games he has thrown for over 2,500 yards and 22 touchdowns while only throwing two interceptions. Wilson can also use his feet as he already has eight rushing touchdowns on the season.

Now it will be interesting to see how Wilson’s game translates to the pros. Being described as “controlled chaos” doesn’t seem like something that Bill Belichick would enjoy.

But the Patriots could use a player that can extend plays with his legs. Newton is nearing the end of his career so New England needs to protect him and have him stay in the pocket. With a young player like Wilson you just let him cook.

What also stands out is Wilson’s arm strength. The Patriots need a QB who can take the top off opposing defenses. Wilson seems like a perfect candidate for New England’s quarterback of the future opening.

Wilson only stoked the fires between himself and the Patriots. It seems as though Wilson would love to be drafted by New England.

"“That’s cool,” Wilson said. “If that’s the team that wants me, shoot, I’ll give it everything I have. Even if Cam [Newton] was still there when I went into that situation, what a great quarterback to learn from. What a great guy to sit behind and experience the way that he has experienced the game and learned from all his mistakes and the things that he’s had success with as well. And [Bill] Belichick’s a great coach and they’re gonna be on top again one day.”"

The fact that Wilson is willing to learn under Newton must earn him some points with the Patriots brass. This would ensure that New England didn’t need to rush Wilson and that when they throw him into a game, he will be ready.

Next. Fate leading Jimmy Garoppolo back to Belichick. dark

So while there isn’t a lot for New England Patriots fans to get excited about in 2020, the future isn’t all that bleak. If Belichick takes the right player (which Wilson sure seems like), New England will be able to bounce back and hopefully become contenders sooner rather than later.
