The Boston Bruins are one of multiple teams who are looking to play their games outside in 2021 in order to have fans in the building.

The NHL season continues to be on the ropes, but it looks like some teams are planning to do everything they can to get fans watching their favorite teams play live and in-person. This includes the Boston Bruins.

It seems rather unlikely that Bruins fans get to pack TD Garden in 2021. COVID cases continue to increase in the state as well as across the country making it seem less and less likely that fans return to arenas (even with a vaccine).

This would be another big blow to the NHL. They desperately need the gate revenue compared to other major sports leagues. Without fans, it seems rather unlikely that a 2020-21 NHL season happens.

That is why hockey fans should be excited about the latest news from The Athletic’s Pierre LeBrun. The hockey insider is reporting that the Bruins are among multiple teams who are looking to play their games outside.

LeBrun goes on to say that the Bruins are looking to play at Fenway Park which makes a lot of sense. The B’s have played there before and even though the sightlines aren’t the same it’s still a great venue.

The problem is that this doesn’t seem like a feasible long-term option. With the NHL season beginning in February or dare I say March, the Red Sox would need Fenway relatively quickly.

It would make more sense for the Bruins to look at Gillette Stadium. The Patriots won’t need it until next season and the Revolution are used to sharing a stadium.

Bruins fans are used to watching games in Gillette as well as a Winter Classic game was held at the stadium. Also playing at the stadium would allow for more fans to be present compared to Fenway.

So it will be interesting to see what the NHL and the Bruins end up doing, but don’t be surprised if there are some open-air games in Boston this upcoming season.
