The Boston Celtics still have room to make some moves, but acquiring Kyle Lowry shouldn’t be one of them.

Now a major part of the Celtics deal with the Hornets that helped Charlotte acquire Gordon Hayward was that $28.5 million traded player exception.

Time is ticking as there is an offseason deadline for the team to use this exception, so Boston needs to think about what possible moves can be made with the exception.

Over the offseason names like Aaron Gordon and Buddy Hield have received some love as possible targets for Boston. Now, these guys could be an interesting addition but Kyle Lowry on the other hand would not.

Why Kyle Lowry has no spot on the Boston Celtics roster.

With Lowry nearing the end of a one-year deal worth over $ 30 million the money would line up. Toronto could get rid of that contract and Boston would get a quality point guard.

With the Raptors struggling, it appears they might be more focused on the future than winning now. getting rid of an aging asset such as Lowry would make a lot of sense.

Now Lowry is still putting up some quality numbers. This season he is averaging 18.7 points, 7.1 assists, and 6 rebounds.

So as you can see on the surface it would seem like a no-brainer for Boston. How could they not make this deal?

Well when you look at the Celtics roster, there isn’t really a spot for Lowry on the roster. Boston already has Kemba Walker who isn’t exactly a spring chicken either.  After that, the Celtics have Marcus Smart, Jeff Teague, and Payton Pritchard to fill in the rest of the minutes.

Players like Pritchard and Smart deserve to continue to get minutes. They are players that the Celtics should continue to invest time and resources into. A deal with Lowry would likely include a player like Smart at the minimum.

Lowry is nearing the end of his career so Boston should steer clear of him. They need to focus on developing their young talent.

Also, the Celtics roster as currently constructed can make a championship run. Last season they were able to make it all the way to the Eastern Conference Finals. With this team continuing to improve, they should make it to the NBA Finals.

So the Celtics don’t need Lowry no matter how good he is performing. There is simply no room for him on the Boston Celtics roster in 2021.
