Things seem to only get worse for the New England Patriots. Matthew Stafford will not be joining the team in 2021, and there was nothing that New England could have done to change that.

In reality, a move for Stafford wouldn’t have been the best idea. He is an aging quarterback who wouldn’t guarantee a Super Bowl for New England.

More from Chowder and Champions

Stafford has always done well His only problem has been that he has been on some poor teams. He deserves his shot to try and win a Super Bowl.

In 2020, Stafford threw for over 4,000 yards and 26 touchdowns. Those are numbers that Patriots fans dream of after the 2020 season.

The Patriots need to get younger and while it might take a while for them to become a contender again, their best option is drafting a quarterback in this year’s draft. Trey Lance and Mac Jones are some names that stick out.

But there is one aspect of Stafford heading to the Rams that shows just how much the Patriots have fallen as an organization. It’s clear that they have a long way to go in order to reach the top once again.

Matthew Stafford denied Patriots

The Patriots might have thought that they were in the running for Stafford, but that wasn’t the case. According to Tom E. Curran, Stafford told the Lions he didn’t want to go to New England.

Pats fans are used to players flocking to the organization. They would even take less money in order to play with Tom Brady and Bill Belichick.

Now players are excluding the Pats from their list of possible destinations. That shows just how much New England misses Tom Brady.

Stafford’s denial of the Patriots also proves that New England will have difficulty bringing players to the organization. The draft honestly could be their only option at acquiring talent.

New England has a long way to go before they get back to the top. They need to start getting younger instead of going all out for one final Super Bowl run. This would only pause an eventual rebuild that will have to take place.

There is no better time than the present. New England needs to begin rebuilding if they want to become a Super Bowl contender once again.
