The Boston Red Sox are seeking their path to the ultimate baseball Nirvana, called, “sustainability”.  Meditate on this. Breath in – breath out. Relax. All will be well… in la-la land.

The Red Sox enter 2021 spring training with a squad that’s let’s say, uninspiring, to say the least.  Their most exciting signing in the offseason was, well … actually, there was no exciting signing. Yet the flowers bloom in the Bosox camp in any event.

More from Chowder and Champions

Boston Red Sox Head of Baseball Operations, Chaim Bloom touched upon this idea of sustainability.

"“I would love to get to the end of this year and be able to look and see that next core that is going to be the center of a sustainable championship contender, and to see that core taking shape,” he said."

Ah yes, a “sustainable championship contender”. The catchword of the 2000s, but the flat word of the 2020s. Core taking shape? Translation: It’s a long way to the top. Hope we get a little bit better than last season’s bottom of the AFC East debacle. So, what is this really all about?

Is this a big joke that is being played on Red Sox Nation to try to lull them to sleep as the team goes into deep, deep hibernation beneath the Bronx Bashers; the Tampa Bay Rays; the Blue Jays; and, even the lowly Bawlimer O’s? Hope not, but it sure looks that way.

When you hear “sustainable”, immediately think, not today. Because that’s what it really means. It means that this club is either not capable or not willing to expend the funds necessary to keep this Big Market team where it should be.

Luxury tax or no luxury tax. That’s at the top of the American League East, Bronx Bonkers or no Bronx Bonkers.
