New England Patriots: Why Cam Newton signing is good move
By Sam Minton
The re-signing of Cam Newton sparked conversation from New England Patriots fans across the globe, but what does it mean for the organization? Is it actually a good move?
Newton struggled immensely in 2020. He struggled to throw the ball and New England had one of its worst seasons in two decades.

While Newton was able to run for nearly 600 yards and 12 touchdowns, the QB was only able to throw for 2,657 yards, eight touchdowns, and 10 interceptions.
2020 was simply not Newton’s years but were the struggles his fault? There’s definitley a chance that he is able to improve now that he has a full season in New England’s organization under his belt.
So it might not be such a terrible move after all.
Why re-signing Cam Newton is a good move for the New England Patriots.
No matter if Newton is the starter or not, there are benefits of bringing him back. Let’s start with him getting the starting role.
Even after re-signing Newton, the Patriots can still draft a young QB in the draft. Trey Lance or Mac Jones still seem like options for New England in 2021.
If these guys were to come in, they could learn a lot from watching Newton be the starter. He’s a former MVP and won the Heisman Trophy after all.
The rookies would learn how to be professionals and wouldn’t have to worry about the pressure of starting right away as rookies. But is there a chance that Newton could end up being the backup?
Especially if New England drafts a player like Trey Lance, there’s a chance that Newton is the backup. While we haven’t seen a lot of Lance, he seems like he could be a special player. Newton could be a valuable resource in a rookie’s first season as a starter.
But at the end of the day if Newton looks bad in training camp they don’t need to keep him. His contract is heavy on incentives so if New England wants to move on from him they can.
So while it might seem like the Patriots are already punting on the 2021 season by re-signing Newton that is not the case. The team still has some flexibility and can still make some moves in the offseason. After this season we could look back and realize that this was a great move by the organization and actually helped the New England Patriots.
