New England Patriots edge rush targets: Jadeveon Clowney

There is no doubt that Jadeveon Clowney is an elite talent on the defensive side of the football, but the question surrounding the ferocious pass rusher is would he be willing to play for Bill Belichick even if the New England Patriots head coach made an offer.

More from Chowder and Champions

After his stint with the Houston Texans, Clowney has spent the last two seasons in Seattle and Tennessee where his production has declined.  In 2019 with the Seahawks, he recorded just 3.0 sacks in 13 games played and last season, Clowney recorded 0.0 sacks in 8 games played with the Titans.

That type of production the last two seasons won’t exactly create a bidding war for a player who demanded big money on the market in 2020 before ultimately signing with the Titans and then doing basically nothing.

Despite a report that Clowney refused a trade to the Miami Dolphins because he didn’t want to play with another Belichick disciple in Brian Flores, the Patriots signing Clowney on a potential one-year prove it deal is intriguing because he is just 28 years old and still has the ability to be a dominant player off the edge if motivated.

Just because he didn’t want to play for a Belichick disciple, does not mean he doesn’t have respect or would play for the coach himself.  This could end up as a bargain for the Patriots if they feel they can reinforce the Houston Texans version of Jadevon Clowney.

With his speed, physical presence and added motivation, this is a surprise signing that could work for both sides in the short term.
