Patriots rumors: Passing on Trey Lance is inept decision from Bill Belichick
By Sam Minton
Some Patriots fans believe that re-signing Cam Newton was a bad decision, but New England actually made a worse decision that very same day.
One of the top quarterback prospects of the 2021 NFL Draft had his Pro Day on Friday. Trey Lance showed off his skills with the draft rapidly approaching.

One would think that Bill Belichick would have to be their right? Well, that wasn’t the case. Belichick decided to chill at home instead of going to see one of the best quarterbacks in the draft.
New England did up sending one of their scouts, but that doesn’t exactly show a lot of interest in Lance. Especially in a year when Pro Day’s are so important.
No one really got to see what Lance could do in 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
So this is the only time that Belichick would be able to see him throw before the draft. For some reason that wasn’t a good enough reason for Belichick to get off the couch.
Fans have to wonder if the organization will even draft Lance now. It sure seems like New England is planning on not selecting Lance.
Passing on Trey Lance is an inept decision from Bill Belichick and New England Patriots.
Lance seems to be a dynamic quarterback who can make an impact relatively quickly. No matter if he backs up Cam Newton or starts right away, it makes a lot of sense to draft Lance.
Unlike Mac Jones who is also linked to the Patriots, Lance has the ability to escape the pocket and gain some yards on the ground. He also has a solid arm and seems to represent what the future of QB’s will look like.
Jones is your more stereotypical QB who operates in the pocket. New England would be hoping that Jones’ arm would be able to get him out of trouble where Lance can use both his feet and his arm.
Also, scouts have consistently said that Lance is a better QB than Jones. He has been at the top of the draft board for awhile compared to Jones who has gone anywhere from the first round to possibly a Day 2 selection.
It almost seems like Belichick’s friendship with Nick Saban is blinding his judgment. He seems content with drafting Jones even though Lance could be a much better option.
Even the fact that Belichick decided not to go to the Pro Day is an awful decision. He should have at least seen what the QB is capable of.
So 2021 is not getting off to a great start for the Patriots. Bill Belichick is making fans question his GM decisions.
This could be a long regular season for New England Patriots fans.
