The New England Patriots have set themselves up for trade up for a top young, talented quarterback in the first round of the 2021 NFL draft.

As Paul Parillo on Patriots All Access astutely noted recently, with all the free agency activity the Patriots don’t have many holes to fill, and thus the club is perfectly placed to make a trade to move up into the top of the 2021 draft to select the young quarterback of the future. He’s right. It makes perfect sense.

The Patriots aggressive attacking mode in free agency has indeed patched holes in the lackluster  7-9, 2020 team.

The team has a clear need for a top young arm looking forward to the future. That in no way as a previous article painstakingly explained should connote, however, that Cam Newton is not an excellent choice to lead the 2021 team. He is, especially now that the Patriots have finally moved in free agency to shore up the dismal state of their offensive skill positions.

How well they have done, is yet to be seen. Yet, while there is still work to be done there, they are in a much position now than prior to free agency, for certain.

The best draft option for the New England Patriots is to go all-in on a quarterback

The competition for top young arms will be fierce in this season’s draft. With the 49ers trading up and landing the third pick in Round 1 from Miami (and Miami staying in range by acquiring the sixth pick), the top three arms could be off the board by the third pick with Trevor Lawrence, Justin Field, and Zach Wilson all possibly taken in the top three. To trade up to a top-three would most likely be considered prohibitively costly by New England.

Such a massive move would take probably three first-round picks and maybe more. If New England, however, could get a pick in the top three for two firsts, a second, and maybe a player, e.g. Stephon Gilmore, that could be a  palatable situation. But that’s if … if they feel that quarterback they then elect is clearly the next great New England quarterback. That’s a very big “if”.

Of course, those lofty expectations often go unmet as many top high draft-pick quarterbacks either flop completely or never come close to measuring up to the hype and hopes. That notwithstanding, trading up in the draft is the right move and the best move for New England right now, in this draft, this year on April 29th. And should that guy they covet be available a bit further down in the first round, all the better.

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder the old saying goes.

If the apple of New England’s eye say is Trey Lance from North Dakota State or maybe Mac Jones of Alabama (who may be available at 15 where the Patriots’ current choice lies), then the price may be much less costly than trading all the way up to the top three to get their guy.

The moral of the story is this, the New England Patriots should make a groundbreaking move to get the guy they feel could be their next star quarterback (forget Lawrence who may be everyone’s top choice, that’s not happening) late next month.

In the first round, there may be great position players available to them at 15 if there is an early run on quarterbacks and it may be tempting to stay put.

Next. New England Patriots: Cam Newton critics chew on this indisputable fact. dark

Nevertheless, the right move is to be one of the teams that aggressively moves to land their quarterback of the future. The most important position on the field and probably the most important position on any club in all team sports is the American football quarterback.

Have one, you have a chance.

If you don’t have one, you don’t. It’s as simple as that. And 2021 is unquestionably the year for the New England Patriots to do whatever is necessary to secure their quarterback of the future.

Whom do you think the Patriots should draft if they move up for a quarterback in the draft?
