New England Patriots rumors: Why trade for Julio Jones makes no sense
By Sam Minton
The New England Patriots seem like they are on the precipice of making a big trade. Out of all the rumored deals that they might make, one that they should hold off on is acquiring Julio Jones.
There is no doubt that New England hasn’t been afraid to shake things up this offseason. They spent a lot of money this offseason acquiring Jalen Mills, Nelson Agholor, Matt Judon, and others. These deals weren’t cheap either.

This was something that Patriots fans weren’t used to seeing. Usually, poor teams panic and are the ones who overspend in free agency. Is this just how far New England has fallen?
Ahead of the 2021 NFL Draft, the rumor mill seems to be heating up. New England is linked with moves to move up in the draft and likely select their QB of the future.
But recently New England has been linked to a new deal. Could Julio Jones wear a Patriots uniform in 2021?
Why the New England Patriots shouldn’t trade for Julio Jones?
According to Peter King, the Patriots would be interested in acquiring Jones. That news isn’t exactly surprising.
Jones is quite the wide receiver. He is an All-Pro who currently holds the most receiving yards per game in NFL history averaging 95.5 yards a game.
Last season Jones only played in nine games but was able to tally 51 catches for 771 yards and three touchdowns. That’s pretty impressive and puts New England’s numbers to shame.
So there is no doubt that Jones is still a great wideout. He will continue to be for the rest of his career.
But New England shouldn’t try and acquire Jones. It doesn’t fit the plan for the future of the franchise.
Even if New England was able to acquire Jones, they wouldn’t win a Super Bowl. The Patriots would still have to battle to make the playoffs. The offense just isn’t reliable enough to be a contender.
The Patriots need to focus on getting younger. Jones just turned 32-years-old which is rather ancient for an NFL wideout. While Jones is still rather great, he is on the decline.
Jones will also cost quite a lot. Atlanta would likely require a decent amount of draft picks Stephon Gilmore could quite possibly be on the table.
So the New England Patriots should stay away from Jones. He won’t make the impact that they desire and simply costs too much. It just doesn’t make sense for the team now and in the future.
