New England Patriots: Why Mac Jones will be a top-flight QB in the NFL
What makes the New England Patriots Mac Jones so special?
How could Mac Jones be that good? Well, he possesses attributes of playing quarterback that just make good things happen. Things like nice plays. Lots of them.
What about Jones is so special? It’s the intangibles folks. He’s no super athlete but neither is he a lump of coal. What he has is what the best have, pocket presence and pocket awareness.

He’s not the fastest, but he knows how to move in the pocket. Knows how to sidestep a rush. Knows how to move around in the pocket. Knows how to spot a defensive nuance, react almost instantaneously, and make the right decision.
It’s not the “arm strength” per se (although he can zip it), not blazing foot speed, really none of that.
His ability is this, it’s the ability to deliver an oblong ball into the hands of a guy with the same jersey he wears with astonishing accuracy. That is what this young man does.
It’s his decision-making and his perspicacity in understanding the game that make Jones such a potential steal of a steals in the 2021 draft.
Could it just be possible that the Patriot’s draft operation really got this one right? It would be unusual, but it just may be a fact.
Make no mistake, there will never be another “steal of history” like the New England Patriots stumbling onto the greatest of all time in the 2000 draft’s sixth-round pick.
That was the Brink’s and Great Train robberies and any and all other thefts all-rolled into one. (Thanks to the late, great Patriots coach Dick Rehbein for his terrific insight on that one.)
Yet, this theft of Jones at No. 15 may later be termed absolute grand theft larceny. Even though he was a first-round pick that came at No. 15.
Four other quarterbacks were drafted in front of him way up in the draft. Tom Brady had the Brady Six. Might the pundits in three or four years be talking about the Mac Jones Four?
Don’t bet against it.
In 2016, nine teams passed on a certain Patrick Mahomes in the NFL Draft. Nine teams are still kicking themselves for the miscue. None has won a Super Bowl since. But Mahomes has and he’s still young and learning his trade.
Jones is young, smart. He has a lot to learn but what he shows already in football nuance, cognizance, and comprehension are simply uncanny. Watching Evan Lazar’s breakdown will help convince you if you have any doubts.
Here are two predictions. In a couple of years, we’ll be talking about Mac Jones as one of the rising mega-stars in the NFL.
And in addition, you’ll be seeing Evan Lazar all over the major networks commenting on Boston sports. Not a betting man, but you can take these predictions to the bank. Both, are rock-solid.
