The Boston Bruins had a chance to take control of their first-round series against the Washington Capitals on Wednesday and that’s exactly what they did. Boston secured the victory and now leads the series 2-1.

Bruins fans will be happy with the return of playoff hockey to Boston. TD Garden was rocking and seemed so loud that you would have thought that it was a full capacity game.

Now the Bruins will be looking ahead to Game Four that takes place on Friday. The chance to go up 3-1 is one that Boston shouldn’t take for granted.

So what do you need to know about Game Three? Here are three takeaways.

3. The Boston Bruins were way too sloppy

While the Bruins were able to walk away with the win, they need to be better if they want to win a Stanley Cup. Especially in the first period, Boston was too sloppy and undisciplined.

In the first period alone there were three penalties called on the Bruins. This included a too many men on the ice call with Nick Ritchie being the guilty party.

These many mistakes can’t happen if you want to win a championship. Boston needs to be smarter out there on the ice.

There was also another problematic play from Brad Marchand. It seems as though he hasn’t learned his lesson from Game Two.

While in a skirmish after the whistle, Marchand once again tried to sneakily lift his stick up and tap an opponent. Once again the winger was caught and ended up heading to the penalty box.

Marchand can’t be taking these dumb penalties. Sooner or later it’s going to cost Boston a game and that could have catastrophic ramifications.

So while it was mostly a positive night, there is no doubt that Boston needs to be more disciplined. If they don’t the series could switch hands quickly.
