The New England Patriots are going to have a true quarterback position battle throughout the entire 2021 NFL season. And just like all of the fans, Julian Edelman is eager to see the position battle between Cam Newton and this year’s first-round draft choice Mac Jones.

Although he is retired and away from the team, it sounds like Edelman is still fully invested in the success of his former team.

Former New England Patriots wide receiver Julian Edelman is eager to see rookie quarterback Mac Jones become New England’s starter.

Although the Patriots drafted Jones in the first-round, head coach Bill Belichick suggested that Newton is still the team’s starting quarterback as of right now.

However, we all know everything with Belichick is subject to change. And a lot can change once camp starts and passes are being thrown in what will be a competitive showdown in New England.

While on The Michael Irvin Podcast, Edelman wanted to talk about all things Patriots more than anything else. In doing so, he weighed in his own thoughts on the near future of the quarterback position for the New England Patriots.

Edelman is impressed with his former coach bringing in a first-round draft pick in Jones. He believes that Jones can beat everyone out and become the starting quarterback for the Pats.

"“Cam works hard. Now we gotta see if he can work smart, in the right areas, and if he does that he’s gonna give himself an opportunity to do well. But he’s also gonna have to beat out the young gun. Cause the young gun is there, little Mac Attack. “This kid, you know, that’s a first round draft pick. That’s like a real first-round draft pick.” – Julian Edelman"

Edelman only played one season with Newton under center in New England. However, Edelman experienced a major downgrade to the quarterback position when Tom Brady left for Tampa Bay and that’s what he’s referring to with his comments. Edelman is saying Newton needs to have a better understanding of reading the field and the coverage of opposing defenses.

The former wide receiver is also saying that the prowess of Jones being a first-round draft pick essentially means that he has all of the necessary tools needed to be the starting quarterback right out of camp and into Week 1. However, while still on the Michael Irvin Podcast, Edelman said it’s going to be hard succeeding Brady and playing in New England where the expectations are always to win a championship.

"“He needs to have that eye. He needs to have that confidence. What are you going to do? This kid, it’s not easy playing in New England, especially after Tom Brady, if he gets the opportunity and beats out the other guy. This ain’t going to be easy. This town is tough. This town is mean. This town is blue-collar. Boston people, the New England people, they want winning. They’re used to that in all sports. The kid’s going to have a lot of pressure.” – Julian Edelman"

Edelman played a crucial role in the success of the second part of the New England Patriots’ double-dynasty. He’s a three-time Super Bowl champion and won MVP for his efforts in Super Bowl LIII. Edelman is only a handful of players in the modern era to have spent their entire career with the New England Patriots.

With that, it’s fair to say that he knows what it takes to win in the NFL and what the Patriots need to do to get to a championship level once again.

Personally, I believe Jones has the necessary tools needed to be a successful quarterback in the NFL. If and when coach Belichick feels that Jones gives New England the best chance of winning, he will not hesitate to start his rookie quarterback this season.
