The 2021 Boston Red Sox can officially be called the comeback kids, especially at Fenway Park.

After falling down 5-1 to Toronto Blue Jays Friday night, the Red Sox battled back to win another thriller 6-5.  This latest comeback comes just one night after the team rallied from behind to defeat the Houston Astros 12-8.

With Garrett Richards on the mound against the dangerous Blue Jays lineup, the Red Sox saw themselves down early as Toronto jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead before Bobby Dalbec got the Sox on the board with a solo home run.

But those relentless Jays pushed the lead to 5-1 on a mammoth Vladimir Guerrero Jr. two-run blast off Red Sox reliever Hirokazu Sawamura in the sixth inning.

It seemed dim on a Friday night at Fenway Park, but with this team, it’s never over until the last out and the boys of Boston never stopped battling down four runs in the sixth inning.

The relentless Boston Red Sox lineup came alive

As the lineup battled back with three runs in the bottom half of the sixth, you can just sense something special coming.  Down 5-4, Christian Arroyo once again flexed his clutch gene with this game-tying solo shot in the bottom of the eighth.

Talk about a player really starting to emerge as one of the unsung heroes of the team less than halfway through the season, Arroyo continues to pick the right spots to show off his power.  His last three homers have been more than clutch, either tying the game or putting the team on top.

Friday night’s homer not only tied the game but jolted a spark of excitement into the Fenway crowd, once again proving that anyone in the lineup is capable of coming through in big spots.

"“I think it’s just that we just believe in our entire lineup.  I know it’s cliché to say because everyone believes in their team, but I truly believe in every single game, for the most part, we’re in every game,” Arroyo said following the game, via MLB.com.  “That 5-1 [deficit] there, yeah, we felt like we were down in the dugout, but we just wanted to put guys on base and make things happen.”"

The lineup does have stretches in which they struggle, but when things are rolling, the Boston Red Sox are a tough team to get out.  After Arroyo’s blast to tie the game, you just knew this team was going to pull out their league-leading 23rd comeback of the season.  It was just a matter of how and who.

Alex Verdugo is the Boston Red Sox hero of the night

There were many heroes on this thrilling night at Fenway Park, but the guy who delivers the game winner is always the most memorable.

More from Boston Red Sox

After Kike Hernandez got on base on a throwing error by Bo Bichette, the scene was set for Alex Verdugo who took care of business against Blue Jays outfielder Rafael Dolis.  His third hit of the game was a special one as he smacked a sinker off the green monster that delivered the game-winning run, sending excitement all through Fenway.

It was truly amazing.  Oh, did someone say amazing?

"“It was amazing, something special for sure,” Verdugo said of the comeback victory.  “One of those things, when you’re at the box, you try your best to calm down and take deep breaths, relax, whatever.  When you have 25, 30,000 people screaming and yelling and jumping up and down, it’s a little hard to kind of get that tunnel vision.”"

In all, it was a huge win for the Boston Red Sox.  After another tough series with the Houston Astros, it is nice to see the team bounce back in a big way against an AL East foe.  They swept the New York Yankees after losing 3-of-4 to the Astros and now have rallied against the Blue Jays after losing 2-of-3 from that Houston team that seems to have their number.

The one negative takeaway from the game, it the struggles of the starting pitching.  In the last four games, the Boston Red Sox starters have put the team in a hole.

Next. Why Chris Sale could be key this season. dark

Luckily, they offense was able to come back the last two games.  If they weren’t, this would be an area of much more concern.  With all the Chris Sale return talk, the rotation as it is right now has to start getting their act together and pitching like they did in the early part of the season.

If they don’t, the Red Sox may need to shatter the record for comebacks to stay on pace for a playoff run.
