Boston Red Sox Low-risk moves at MLB Trade Deadline: Jonathan Schoop

The ideal MLB Trade Deadline trade would be acquiring Anthony Rizzo from the Chicago Cubs.  That would be the perfect trade for Boston Red Sox fans.  But, if the price is too high for that potential reunion, a low-risk option is Detroit Tigers infielder Jonathan Schoop.

More from Chowder and Champions

The Red Sox were linked to Schoop when he was a free agent, so a deal for him wouldn’t be too surprising considering the cost and the fact that he is now playing first base with the Tigers and is putting together a pretty good offensive season.

After struggling at the plate to begin the season, Schoop is hitting .284 with 17 homers and 60 RBI.  That is some pretty good production to add to the lineup and would satisfy the first base position…at least for the rest of the season.

Another added benefit to adding a Jonathan Schoop is his ability to play second base as well.  When Christian Arroyo returns, it would allow for Red Sox manager Alex Cora to continue to use Kike Hernandez in the outfield if the team doesn’t trade for another outfielder.

Considering the low cost of obtaining Schoop, the Red Sox would also hold onto Bobby Dalbec, who would continue to get an opportunity to show he can be a productive power source at first base more consistently.  That’s part of the high reward with Schoop.

The Red Sox can continue to develop Dalbec while having a reliable veteran holding down the first base position and helping the team win down the stretch.

In all, not a big splash move, but you can’t be made at Chaim Bloom either if this is the type of move he makes at the MLB Trade Deadline.
