Why the New England Patriots should target cornerback Carlton Davis III

Bill Belichick’s approach to the offseason when it comes to the cornerback position will depend largely on what the team does with Pro Bowl cornerback J.C. Jackson who will be looking for a big pay day.

Whether that pay day comes as a member of the New England Patriots is one of the bigger stories entering the offseason.  Belichick could slap the franchise tag on Jackson who he could see another player out there who could replace him.  Could that be Carlton Davis III?

While Davis is a player the Buccaneers would love to keep, a team like the Patriots could target the 24-year-old cornerback and offer him a deal and an opportunity that could propel his exit out of Tampa.

Like Whitehead, Carlton Davis III would bring youth and experience to the New England Patriots secondary with a chance to excel under the guidance of Belichick.  He only had one interception in 2021, but the former second-round pick was limited due to injury.

Again, depending on what happens with Jackson, Davis could be targeted as a possible replacement or a player who could stabilize that No. 2 corner role alongside Jackson.  That second option wouldn’t be shabby at all if you are a Patriots fan.  With that possibility, Belichick could use Jalen Mills as a No. 3 and the team would also have Jonathan Jones returning from injury.  That would be a solid group.

It all starts with paying J.C. Jackson.
