The Boston Red Sox could be an absolute catastrophe in 2023, with the way things look now. Some fans might even be wondering, “what can we possibly have to look forward to with the Red Sox in 2023? It’s a lost season!”

Well, for the most part, you’re not wrong! The 2023 Red Sox are potentially heading toward another last place finish in the A.L. East and as one of the worst teams in the MLB.

But one thing that could be fun to watch is the development and first full MLB season for young first baseman Triston Casas. The Red Sox DFA’d Eric Hosmer earlier this off-season. So the Red Sox must really like him.

Whatever the case is, this Red Sox team will have to heavily rely on Casas in the 2023 season.

The Boston Red Sox will rely on Triston Casas for power

This Red Sox lineup doesn’t have a lot of power that we can talk about. Yes, Rafael Devers is the power that they have currently. But who else could help the powerful lefty hitter? Enter Casas into the conversation.

We know that Casas has a great approach at the plate and will take his walks when necessary. Very impressive for a 23 year old hitter! But nobody talks about the power he can provide.

Casas hit 11 homeruns in 72 games for the Worcester Red Sox in 2022, before being called up to the big club. The year before? Of his 86 hits in AA and AAA ball, 32 of them were for extra-base hits. So we see what the young lefty from Florida can do!

Triston Casas will provide good defense for the Boston Red Sox

This is more valuable for the Red Sox than fans could think. Think about the poor attempts the Red Sox had for first basemen before Casas came into the picture.

Seriously, it was brutal to try to find a first baseman.

Franchy Cordero was an option for awhile. How well did that work out? Well, he was released after the 2022 season.

Kyle Schwarber was also an option for half of the 2021 season. How well did that work out? Defensively it had its moments. But overall, could’ve been a lot worse!

In 2022, there were still struggles with Cordero and others.  But now, we have a legitimate first baseman that can play the position. Not to mention playing the position well!

In 22 games at first base with the Red Sox, Casas only committed one error. Very encouraging signs to say the least!

Triston Casas needs to take a major step forward for the Red Sox in 2023.

Next. Wacha, Hosmer, and a very bold prediction. dark

This team doesn’t have a lot to look forward to and fans anticipate that Devers will be the next to leave town after 2023. A guy like Triston Casas can at least make you excited about the future of this team.

It won’t be easy. It may not even be enjoyable at times. But overall, I’m thinking Casas provides a spark for this Red Sox team that desperately needs one in the 2023 season.
