The Boston Red Sox made a huge mistake this offseason and it’s becoming more and more clear by the day that they made the wrong decision.

Losing Xander Bogaerts was already was a bad look for the team, but his replacements have been even worse.

The former Sox shortstop is batting .361/.437/.607 with 4 HR and 10 RBI this season with San Diego.

Boston Red Sox shortstop situation in shambles

The Sox were left with some tough decisions to make coming into this season that they brought upon themselves. Who’s going to be the starting shortstop for the team?

Their plan was Trevor Story, who’s still out with an elbow surgery that was inevitable of happening. So they went to their backup plan Kiké Hernández!

Well, Hernández hit .083 with 13 strikeouts while committing a league leading five errors. After moving him to centerfield because of the injury to Adam Duvall, he’s already doubled his hits in about half the at bats. So then Boston went with plan C, Yu Chang!

The Pool A MVP from the World Baseball Classic had nothing but hype coming back from the WBC for obvious reasons. .438 average, 1.438 OPS, seven hits, and eight RBI. Well, his major league play did not replicate those numbers at all.

After starting 0-28 on the season, he got his first hit of the year in the win against the Angels. To his defense, it was a big home run. Obviously Chang hasn’t been outstanding offensively so Boston went with plan D, Bobby Dalbec!

Once again, Boston struck nothing with Dalbec at shortstop. A two hits in four games for the AAA legend as he struggled offensively. He made some routine plays at shortstop which was a nice change from Hernández, but he did commit an error in the field against Tampa Bay. He gets one free pass, however, since shortstop is not his natural position.

A residual effect of having lost Bogey, is having Christian Arroyo become a full time starter.

Before the season started, I was all in on Arroyo being the Red Sox second basemen until Story came back, but midway through April and Arroyo should not have an everyday role on this baseball team.

Boston Red Sox have a very serious catcher problem. dark. Next

He’s struggled mightily this season batting a whopping .170 as the Red Sox second baseman this year but at least his defense has been nice, as he ranks in the 91st percentile in outs above average.

As you can tell I am STILL not over Xander Bogaerts being a Padre and at the rate that the Boston Red Sox shortstops are playing at, it may be a while before I’m mentally at ease with that fact.
