The Boston Red Sox are off to a slow start this May after a relatively hot April. So far this month the Sox have dropped six of their 13 games, dropping them to 22-20, still in last place of the tough AL East.

Red Sox have dropped from third to last place in a matter of a week and a half

While they’re still two games above .500, this team is going to be going through a dog fight for third-fifth place with the Yankees, Blue Jays, and Orioles, assuming Baltimore cools down a little.

With this recent skid, however, it’s showing who Boston is going to be this season. An inconsistent team that will hover around .500 all season and that’s not a knock to them. If Boston can manage to stay, let’s say six-seven games over .500, that might be enough for a playoff spot – it also might not be.

It’s a safe bet to say that the Wild Card spots will most likely be filled with three teams from the AL East, so it’s just a matter of who will make it.

Leaving the month of April and entering May, Boston was riding an eight game win streak. Since then, they’ve lost six of their last seven games and in some very annoying ways. From pitch clock violations to fielding errors to not having timely hits in big spots of the game, Red Sox fans can agree that they’ve lost in some pretty egregious ways, but that further solidifies my point.

This team all season is either going to shoot themselves in the foot or completely impress in their wins. That’s just who this Red Sox team is.

When the season started, if someone told Red Sox fans that their team would be two games above .500 in the middle of May, everyone would’v taken that ecstatically.

If someone told Sox fans that their team would be in last place in the middle of May, some would be surprised, but many would think “obviously”, due to the loss of their star shortstop.

Now, if someone told you that they would be two games above .500 AND in last place, there might be some confusion, but that’s just the way that it goes in the strongest division in baseball.

I’m excited to see how this team plays for the rest of May and if April is anything to use as a baseline, a couple games around .500 would make too much sense for this team come June 1.
