We all know that the New England Patriots had to fix a lot of things on offense and special teams.

The offense has dramatically improved with several additions. We know the addition of offensive coordinator Bill O’Brien has been exactly what this team has needed.

From the players side of things, the additions of Juju Smith-Schuster and Mike Gesicki will help the offense be more explosive. Don’t forget, there could be the realistic possibility that Deandre Hopkins ends up in New England too!

From the special teams side of things, the return of Matthew Slater and addition of Chris Hoard will definitely get this unit back to where it was a few seasons ago.

But nobody is really talking about this New England Patriots defense. This is probably the best unit they have currently. The scary thing is that the 2023 Patriots defense has the chance to be very special this upcoming season.

New England Patriots defense scoring points

At times last year, the New England Patriots needed a spark to get them going. The defense understood that assignment several times.

The Patriots defense had a knack for scoring points. Whether it was the Kyle Dugger pick-six in Las Vegas, the scoop and score against the Lions, or the Marcus Jones pick-six against the Bengals; the Patriots defense could put points up!

When your defense has a nose for the football and can make game-changing plays, that can take a lot of pressure off the offense. With another year of veterans like Matt Judon, Josh Uche, Jack Jones, and others in the fold; it gives this unit a lot of optimism heading into 2023.

New England Patriots defense adding weapons from the draft

Not only do the Patriots have veterans they can depend on with the defense, but they also have some rookies that could come right in and make a difference.

Christian Gonzalez is already impressing some Patriots players. His size and athleticism is prime for a player that could be looking to snag the CB1 position. If he can handle it, put him on A.J. Brown Week 1 when the Patriots welcome Philadelphia to Gillette.

Keion White looks like he can be a great pass rusher and potentially take some pressure off of Matt Judon. He’s big, strong, and has a chip on his shoulder from being selected in the second round of the NFL Draft. That’s a great sign!

Marte Mapu is already turning heads at minicamp and is showing his versatility.

So if these guys can make significant contributions this season, it takes this defense to another level.

Deandre Hopkins can't leave Foxboro without a deal. dark. Next

The best teams have a championship caliber defense. This New England Patriots team is very close to being at that desired level.

So if the offense can hold up its end of the bargain, the special teams can be decent, and the defense performs at a high level…watch out for the Patriots in 2023!
