After a disappointing end to the 2025-26 NBA season, it was fair to question whether the Boston Celtics were going to make some major moves. According to ESPN's Brian Windhorst, he doesn't expect Boston to move either Derrick White or Jaylen Brown.
In an interview with CLNS Radio, Windhorst stated:
"You can debate whether that's something they'll consider, but I'm going to tell you: I have not heard any material, true discussions. I'm not certain... maybe someone has called on Jaylen Brown, but I have not heard one iota of Jaylen Brown truly being available, or Derrick White being available."
Celtics have a Jaylen Brown decision to make this offseason
This past season was arguably the best of Brown's career, but the ending was one to forget, with the Celtics blowing a 3-1 lead to the Philadelphia 76ers. As bad as the collapse was, it was made worse by the fact that it was the first 3-1 lead blown in Celtics history and the New York Knicks demolishing Philly in round two.
Most trade rumors surrounding Brown have come from people wondering if Boston could find itself in the sweepstakes for Milwaukee Bucks superstar Giannis Antetokounmpo. While Boston could theoretically achieve a trade for the Greek Freak without including Brown, it would require it to send out multiple players on the team.
In the offseason, Boston could look to secure Brown's future in green when he becomes extension-eligible. Currently extended through the 2028-29 season, Brown can agree to a two-year, $142 million extension this summer. After finishing as a member of the NBA's All-NBA Second Team, it will be interesting to see if Boston offers Brown the max.
Derrick White is looking for a bounceback season next year
Contrary to Brown, this past season was easily the worst season for White during his tenure with the Celtics. Appearing in 77 games for Boston, White's averaged 16.5 points but only shot 39.4% from the field and 32.7% from three. Both percentages are his lowest when looking at every season he's fully played for Boston.
One reason for his numbers being worse was the loss of Jayson Tatum, which gave him more responsibility on offense. Now that Tatum has returned and will begin next season healthy for the Celtics, White's play could improve back to his normal standards.
Working against White is that he will be 32 at the beginning of next season and is near the end of his prime. White's play last season could be an indicator that his best days are behind him.
In the short term, White's contract has a player option following the 2027-28 season. Officially, White is under contract for two more years, with the potential for a third. Given his age and play falling off this past season, Boston should look for someone who can take over for White when the time comes.
