The New England Patriots' secondary was one of their best groups in 2025, and after adding Kevin Byard in free agency, they could be nearly unstoppable. They have arguably the best corner in the league in Christian Gonzalez, a crafty veteran locking down the other boundary in Carlton Davis, and one of the best slot corners in Marcus Jones. Not to mention their new safety tandem of Craig Woodson and Kevin Byard. With that being said, let's dive into the potential of this group and how they can dominate in 2026.
Don't throw at Christian Gonzalez
Christian Gonzalez is arguably the best cornerback in football, and for good reason.
He will erase opposing receivers from the game plan, and when he shadows a number one weapon, you can be sure they are going to be in for a long night. The Oregon product is one of the few corners in the NFL that can completely lock down any player he matches up with, and has the reputation to make opposing quarterbacks avoid throwing his way entirely.
Gonzalez is due for a contract extension next offseason. However, it would be good business to get the deal done now. That way, he has the security of a new contract, and the team retains one of their best players for the foreseeable future. Regardless of a new contract, Gonzalez will continue to thrive as a Patriot and will be one of the main reasons New England will continue to win.
The Patriots' other cornerbacks complement each other very well
Carlton Davis is a reliable veteran with great length and athleticism. His length allows him to constantly disrupt receivers and break up passes, all while benefiting from Gonzalez shutting down an entire side of the field.
With Gonzalez erasing number one receivers, it allows Davis to have favorable matchups against second and third receivers. Having a boundary corner duo of Gonzalez and Davis is one of the strongest parts of the Patriots' roster.
Not to mention Marcus Jones, who is one of the best athletes on the team, solidifying the slot corner position. He had the best year of his career in 2025 and earned a well-deserved contract extension. With another off-season of building and growing together, this corner room could look like the best in the AFC by the end of the season.
The Patriots have a dynamic duo at safety
The Patriots have a bright young star in safety Craig Woodson, and as a rookie, he was one of the key contributors during their Super Bowl run. The fact that he played so well and had such a huge impact as a rookie just shows he could be in for a serious year two leap. With an entire offseason in the Vrabel-led program, Woodson will likely be one of the biggest X-factors on the defense.
The Patriots also added Kevin Byard in free agency, and he is one of the most reliable and respected veterans in the NFL. Adding a veteran who can mentor Woodson, while playing alongside him, will have huge benefits for New England. We could see a seriously dangerous safety tandem in Foxborough that has quite a few interceptions, especially with the stacked corner room that will create havoc for opposing quarterbacks.
New England's secondary can cause fear in opposing quarterbacks
Just imagine being an opposing quarterback heading into Gillette Stadium for a Sunday Night game, and when making a pre-snap read, you see a secondary lurking that consists of Gonzalez, Davis, Jones, Woodson, and Byard.
Good luck.
First thing a quarterback will do is automatically look away from Gonzalez because you will be throwing into a wall. Then you have to hope your second or third option can beat Davis, who has some of the longest arms at the position, so that throw better be perfectly in a window where Davis can't reach out for it. All while hoping one of the Patriots' two elite safeties is lurking and waiting for the smallest mistake. Overall, attempting to throw against the no-fly zone that is this New England secondary is ill-advised and will likely end terribly for opposing offenses.
