The New England Patriots' offseason approach during free agency has been a somewhat nice change of pace compared to recent years. The team has spent a significant amount of money acquiring a lot of talent for the defensive side of the ball. On the offensive side of the ball, the Patriots seem to be taking a different approach. Deciding not to spend big on the offense has become a frustrating yet familiar feeling for New England fans.
On the offensive side of the ball, the Patriots did add former Bills receiver Mack Hollins on a two-year deal. He has struggled to settle with one team due to his average play, as the 31-year-old will be on his fifth team in five years.
The team has also taken steps to sign another former Bills receiver. In doing so, the new Josh McDaniels offense led by second-year quarterback Drake Maye would get a much-needed boost heading into next season.
Stefon Diggs Visit Shows Promise
Although there have been indications the Patriots will sign Diggs, the receiver left New England without a deal. According to NFL insider Jordan Schultz, this was an introductory meeting of the two sides. This could be a sign to Patriots fans that the team will finally sign a top-tier receiver. Even though Diggs is recovering from his torn ACL last season, it would be a huge pick-up for the Patriots offense.
The #Patriots' visit with WR Stefon Diggs has ended, and while there is no deal in place as of now, both sides intend to remain in contact. As it was described to me, this was more of a "get to know you" and "where you're at medically" type of meeting. pic.twitter.com/nnmOB7udCo

Fans Do Not Believe Patriots Can Sign Diggs
While this news may be interesting, fans seem apathetic towards the likelihood of the Patriots getting Diggs. In recent years, it has been difficult to get excited about the potential of the Patriots signing a great receiver.

No deal.
“Good visit..”
“Sides will talk..”
Yeah, NAH.

Given the history of the Patriots' inability to bring in high-end talent, it's not unreasonable to think the same won't happen with Diggs. After losing out on top-tier receivers DK Metcalf, Davante Adams, Cooper Kupp, and Chris Godwin, among others, it is painfully clear that New England struggles to sign receivers at a premium price.
That “WR Stefon Diggs is signing a 2 year, $36 million contract with the Carolina Panthers after his meeting with the New England Patriots” tweet is gonna be hilarious

Whether it's a question of money or New England is not a desired location for free agents, it has been frustrating to watch the best wide receivers go to different teams when the Patriots desperately need one. Fans had their hearts broken earlier in free agency when the Patriots lost out on Chris Godwin. Since then, the Patriots have remained quiet regarding the receiver position.
The Patriots Have an Advantage With Diggs
Still rehabbing from the torn ACL he suffered during the Texans' Week 8 victory against the Colts, Diggs' price has likely taken a hit, making him more affordable. This is undoubtedly an attraction to the Patriots, who would love to acquire a WR1 at a bargain price. Whether or not Diggs signs with the Patriots, indications are that they are also likely to address their wide receiver need in this year's draft.
Acquiring a highly talented, very productive wide receiver has been a major flaw with the Patriots organization over the years. Fans have become more frustrated as this offseason has shown this trend is to continue. Hopefully, the Patriots will sign Diggs or another talented receiver, but fans remain doubtful.
