It looks like Christian Gonzalez wants to stick with the New England Patriots for the long haul, which is exactly what fans needed to hear.
During the start of New England's mandatory minicamp on Tuesday, the Oregon product spoke about his love for the team and made it clear he "wants to be here."
"Of course, I want to be here. I've said this multiple times," Gonzalez told reporters Tuesday. "I've been drafted here. I want to be rewarded as a Patriot. I love this town. I love this city. So of course I want to be here."
Gonzalez is eligible for a contract extension this offseason, and he has an $18.1 million club option for the 2027 season.
Maybe it's easy for me to say because it isn't my money, but this really shouldn't be that much of a debate. Gonzalez, who has established himself as one of the best cornerbacks in the NFL (and, no exaggeration, may have single-handedly stopped New England from getting blown out in Super Bowl LX due to his clutch plays), deserves to get paid whatever he wants. And as it stands, it's fair to assume he probably will.
Hopefully for him, the organization, and the fans, he gets that contract with the Patriots.
Christian Gonzalez is a big part of the Patriots' future
New England's offense finally looks legit (Drake Maye should take an even bigger leap in Year 3, the team bolstered its receiving corps with the acquisitions of A.J. Brown and Romeo Doubs, it improved its offensive line after drafting Caleb Lomu and signing Alijah Vera-Tucker, and it has a promising running back committee), but if the team is serious about being long-term contenders, it's going to be because of its defense.
And that all starts with Gonzo.
He is the anchor of the Patriots' defense, and given that he is only 24 years old (well, in a couple of weeks he'll be 24), he can be a big-time player for several years to come. New England has one of the best secondaries in the NFL already, and it's going to be one of its biggest strengths by default as long as Gonzalez sticks around.
The Patriots have a running history of winning Super Bowls with elite cornerbacks (see: Ty Law, Asante Samuel, Darrelle Revis, Malcolm Butler, Stephon Gilmore... and Cyrus Jones!). Hopefully for them, they can add Gonzalez to that list soon. But in order for that to happen, it's imperative that they sign him to a new contract as soon as possible.
