Patriots receive crucial A.J. Brown trade update amid latest rumors

Other teams are in the mix, but ESPN's Adam Schefter still expects A.J. Brown to end up in New England.

While it's not guaranteed, there is a general consensus that on or right after June 1st, A.J. Brown is going to become the newest member of the New England Patriots.

And that makes a ton of sense. There has been speculation for years that he isn't too happy with the Philadelphia Eagles because of his inconsistent targets, he was with Mike Vrabel during his time with the Tennessee Titans, he notoriously grew up a Patriots fans and admitted he cried after the team passed on him in the 2019 draft (for N'Keal Harry, no less), and New England is still in desperate need of a No. 1 receiver.

However, none of that is stopping other teams from getting into the mix. In a recent episode of "The Pat McAfee Show," ESPN's Adam Schefter reported that the Los Angeles Rams and Jacksonville Jaguars have been linked to the Mississippi native, though he still expects him to end up with the Patriots in the coming weeks.

"Now we're starting to hear about other teams entering the mix. I was on a Philadelphia radio show this morning. They brought up the idea that the [Los Angeles] Rams could be getting back in. They brought up the idea that the [Jacksonville] Jaguars could be getting back in. All of a sudden, that's interesting," Schefter.

"I will remain in the camp that we've been in for the last six, seven weeks, which is that I still think he's getting traded. I still think he's getting traded on or shortly after June 1st. I still think that the New England Patriots are going away the lead contender to land A.J. Brown this offseason."

Trading for A.J. Brown would greatly elevate the Patriots' offense

New England's receiving corps is decent as is, but acquiring Brown will really elevate it to another level.

Brown is a fantastic vertical threat due to his size (six-foot-one, 226 pounds), physicality and strength, ability to make contested catches, and ability to just get open. Outside of Kayshon Boutte (who is inferior to Brown and is likely gone this offseason anyway), the Patriots don't have a dependable deep threat on the roster. There's hope that maybe Kyle Williams can become that because of his speed and ability to create immediate separation, but we're likely still a few years away from him becoming a legitimate weapon.

Additionally, acquiring the one-time Super Bowl champion would give Drake Maye a new go-to guy, which is crucial for any young quarterback (especially for Maye, given that the Patriots released Stefon Diggs earlier this year after one season with the team).

Brown's presence and gravity would open up a ton of opportunities for the rest of New England's receivers, and it could help open up its run game. As it stands, it seems all but guaranteed that Brown is going to become the newest Patriot in a week or so. And fans should be absolutely thrilled about that.
