6 Patriots Who Could Be Cut Prior to Training Camp
By Randy Gurzi
It's going to take some time to get used to the New England Patriots taking the field without Bill Belichick as their head coach. Since 2000, he's been the leader on the sidelines and even though it was time for a change, it's going to be strange at first.
Jerod Mayo should have no problem proving himself worthy of the job, however. The former linebacker played for the Patriots from 2008 through 2015 and has been an assistant coach with them since 2019. He knows the organization well and has the intelligence to get the job done.
His first task will be figuring out who makes it to Week 1 as a member of the 53-man roster. Training camp and the preseason will help them sort that out but before the decisions get too difficult, here's a look at six players who could be let go before camp.
6. La'Michael Pettway, TE
At 27 years of age, La'Michael Pettway is still looking for his shot in the NFL.
Undrafted out of Iowa State in 2020, Pettway played for the TSL Aviators in The Spring League in 2021. He then spent time in the USFL, playing for the Birmingham Stallions and Michigan Panthers. He did enough to impress the Indianapolis Colts, signing with them last year.
However, he was released with an injury designation after less than three weeks. Eventually, he landed with New England, signing a two-year deal in December of 2023.
Since then, the Patriots not only changed head coaches but they've added depth around Pettway. New England signed Mitchell Wilcox and AUstin Hooper while also drafttin Jaheim Bell. That might be enough topush Pettway out of the door.
