Old Friend Wants the Opportunity to Help Patriots Tank

Whether Bill Belichick likes it or not (and despite his best efforts to prevent it), the New England Patriots need to tank. They have the worst record in the AFC at 2-8 and are about to miss the playoffs for the third time in four years. They need a reset, and the fastest way to do that in the NFL is by losing a bunch of games and drafting a new quarterback.
The 2024 NFL Draft is still several months away, however, and the Patriots still have some games to lose in the meantime. A couple of meaningless wins down the stretch would be absolutely devastating to their draft position, likely costing them a top-5 pick and a shot at the best QB prospects in this year's draft class.
New England needs someone it can trust to suck, especially under center. Mac Jones might be too good (he was a Pro Bowler, after all), but what about Cam Newton?

Newton hasn't played in two years, so he'd be perfect. By the time he knocks all of his rust off, the season will be over.
The 34-year-old Newton is apparently still seeking a return to the NFL, but nobody wants him. That's not surprising given how terrible he was over his last few seasons, including his abysmal 2020 campaign with the Patriots.
Over his three most recent seasons, Newton is 7-15 with a 61.9% completion rate and more interceptions (16) than passing touchdowns (12). Jones' TD/INT ratio is 10/10, which isn't bad enough. We need someone a bit more mistake-prone like Newton who really struggles at throwing the ball.
Imagine Newton trying to pass with our horrendous offensive line and non-existent receiving corps. You think Jones is bad? Just wait.
New England should give Newton a call. We know he's available, we know he's bad, and that's exactly what we need.
