Patriots Eyeing Shocking Trade for Elite Defender
By Tyler Maher
Today is the NFL Trade Deadline, and the New England Patriots are supposed to be sellers. They're 2-6, they're last in the AFC East, and this season is going nowhere. If there was ever a time to sell, this is certainly it.
Except Bill Belichick doesn't see it that way, of course. He remains under the delusion that this team can still be competitive and is actually trying to buy at the deadline.
Patriots Trade Rumors
NFL insider Jeff Howe reported on Tuesday afternoon (roughly three hours before the 4 p.m. ET deadline) that while the Patriots have received calls about their most likely trade candidates such as Josh Uche and Ezekiel Elliott, they have also been making calls as well. Specifically, they've inquired about the price of Washington Commanders DE Chase Young.
The Commanders, after all, are sellers too. They already sent DE Montez Sweat to the Chicago Bears in exchange for a draft pick earlier in the day, so they're open for business. Young is a former Defensive Rookie of the Year and All-Pro defender, making him a pretty big fish if he is available.
There are a couple of problems with Belichick's strategy, however. One is that Washington already traded away a defensive end and probably isn't looking to move another. A second is that the Commanders and Patriots are playing each other this week, so Washington probably doesn't want to face one of its former players immediately after trading him.
Lastly, New England shouldn't be even thinking about acquiring Young, who is going to be a free agent at the end of the season and probably wouldn't re-sign with the Patriots. Belichick should be going after draft picks, not pricey rentals.
For New England fans, it's alarming to know that Belichick is wasting precious time leading up to the deadline on silly deals like these. He needs to wake up and make some trades that will actually benefit the team beyond this year rather than make moves that will ultimately give us worse draft position in the spring.
Belichick may not know what he's doing, but sports bettors who do should sign up for DraftKings Sportsbook. New users who sign up and bet $5 will instantly get $200 in bonus bets guaranteed, regardless of whether their first wager wins or loses. This offer is only here for a limited time, though, so don't miss out!
