Recent Patriots Addition Named in Trade Rumors Ahead of Deadline
By Tyler Maher
At 2-5 and sitting in last place in the AFC East, the New England Patriots should absolutely be sellers at the trade deadline next week. It doesn't matter if they win or lose this week, because this team just doesn't have the horses.
Let's not kid ourselves here. Even if the Patriots do miraculously make the playoffs, does anyone honestly think they'll win anything once they get there? Their last two playoff trips have both ended in embarrassing first-round exits, including a humiliating 47-17 blowout by the Buffalo Bills two years ago.
If Bill Belichick is as smart as he claims to be, he'll realize this and start selling off pieces to help rebuild for the future (but since he's a stubborn old man who never admits when he's wrong, he probably won't).
That includes someone who just got here -- tight end Mike Gesicki,
Mike Gesicki Trade Rumors
In a recent ESPN article about players who could be traded, Gesicki's name came up for New England even though he's only in his first season with the team.
There's nothing wrong with Gesicki, but it could be a good time for the Patriots to sell high on him after his game-winning touchdown catch in Week 7. They already have a TE1 in Hunter Henry and TE3 Pharaoh Brown has shown some promise, making Gesicki potentially expendable.
Gesicki is more of a pass-blocking tight end who doesn't bring a lot to the table on offense anyway. His production cratered during his final season with the Miami Dolphins last year, as he finished with just 32 catches on 52 targets for 362 yards despite playing all 17 games. He's on pace for similarly underwhelming numbers this season with 17 catches on 22 targets for 149 yards through 7 games.
With three viable tight ends at the moment, New England can afford to trade one. Tight end production can be hard to come by, so Gesicki should at least bring something of value back in a possible trade.
Patriots fans were just starting to get used to Gesicki, but they should brace themselves for the possibility that he might not be here next week.
