The moves keep on coming for the New England Patriots in free agency. We were all wondering when the moves would be coming. Now, they won’t stop!

They needed a tight end after sending Jonnu Smith to the Atlanta Falcons. Yes, Hunter Henry is a great option as your number one tight end. But you can always use another tight end to help with blocking and pass-catching ability, especially in the red zone.

On Friday morning, the Patriots signed former Dolphins tight end Mike Gesicki to a one year contract. The deal is worth up to $9 million in 2023.

New England Patriots getting a red zone threat with Mike Gesicki

One of the biggest problems for the Patriots in 2022 was their red zone struggles. They were at the bottom of the league in red zone efficiency. With Mike Gesicki now in the fold, the Patriots should improve in that area with ease.

The 6-foot-6, 247 pound tight end brings a level of efficiency to an offense that desperately needs it heading into this season. He has had multiple seasons of 700 yards receiving. Last season, he scored five touchdowns for the Dolphins in an offense that highlighted Jaylen Waddle and Tyreek Hill.

So this is a great add for the Patriots when they get inside the 20 yard line. There could be situations where you have a two tight end package and the defense is doubling Hunter Henry. This can leave many opportunities for Gesicki to be productive and put points up for the offense. Sounds good to me!

The contract for Gesicki is a one year deal that can pay up to $9 million. That’s a steal for a 27 year old productive tight end!

Gesicki is somebody that both Bill Belichick and Bill O’Brien admire and respect. O’Brien even recruited him to play for Penn State when the Pats coordinator was the head coach for the Nittany Lions. If the head coach and offensive coordinator are big fans of you, that usually bodes well!

So to pay for a reliable tight end and have the contract only be up to $9 million, AND have more space to make more free agency moves; huge win by the Patriots!

The bottom line with the New England Patriots signing Mike Gesicki

This is a low-risk, high reward type of move for this Patriots team. They needed a second tight end and they got him for the 2023 season.

Now the Patriots are adding playmakers to the offensive side of the ball. Is Mike Gesicki on a Travis Kelce or George Kittle type level? Not necessarily!

But he’s someone who can help move the ball down the field and make tough catches in tight coverage. Considering the NFL is a passing league and you need good pass catchers to win games; this is an important signing for this Patriots team.

Will the Patriots be done with free agency signings? Potentially. Do I think they are done with off-season moves as a whole? No.

You brought in JuJu Smith-Schuster. Mike Gesicki is now here. But I have a hunch that there’s one more big piece to drop very soon!
