The Patriots are being too kind to Bill.

I'd never thought I'd say this, but Bill Belichick absolutely deserves to be fired. The New England Patriots are 2-8, they're going to miss the playoffs for the third time in four years, and Belichick has screwed up the roster beyond all repair.

Those 6 Super Bowl rings were great, but it's time for him to go. And with the Patriots on their bye week, now is the perfect time to cut the cord.

And yet, New England refuses to fire him because of a pretty dumb reason.

Bill Belichick Rumors

According to NFL insider Albert Breer, Patriots owner Robert Kraft is holding off on canning Belichick because he thinks the optics of firing a legendary coach midseason would look bad. Apparently, ownership feels Belichick deserves a more graceful exit during the offseason.

But seriously, who cares about the optics at this point? You know what's bad optics? Having the worst record in the AFC. Scoring 6 points in your trip to Germany. Rows of empty seats at Gillette Stadium. Turning a former dynasty into a laughingstock with your arrogance, nepotism and failure to adapt.

That's what Belichick has done, and at this point he doesn't deserve a classy goodbye. He has treated his players ruthlessly for decades, showing no mercy and no forgiveness. Why should he deserve any different?

New England has never hesitated to move on from a player when he wasn't performing, doing his job or producing results. Kraft should do the same.

And what's the point of waiting? If you know you're going to fire someone, just do it already and rip off the band-aid. This would be the perfect time to promote Jerod Mayo and see if he has what it takes to be a head coach. If not, then the Patriots can hire someone else in the offseason.

Kraft doesn't owe Belichick anything anymore, not after all the money he's paid him to build terrible teams lately.
