Red Sox Have Excellent Opportunity to Take AL East Lead by May Thanks to Upcoming Schedule

After losing three games in a row to Toronto, the Red Sox still have an excellent chance to take a lead in the AL East with their upcoming schedule.

Despite its recent losing streak, the Boston Red Sox are still in a good spot to take control of the division. After an impressive series sweep of the St Louis Cardinals, the team lost three out of four games against the Toronto Blue Jays. The cold weather in Fenway might have affected the team's recent slump offensively. The first two weeks of the Sox season have had ups and downs so far. Despite this recent hiccup, the team is still in an excellent position to gain a strong position within the division.

The Sox are currently tied for 3rd place in the division, but the Red Sox's early season struggles have revealed their weaknesses, similar to when the team played the Texas Rangers. When the bats don't heat up, the team becomes highly vulnerable, while their defense has been mistake-prone as of late.

After Thursday night's matchup versus Toronto, the Red Sox have what should be a relatively easy stretch over the next week and a half.

Over the next 11 games, the Red Sox are facing what many consider the worst team in baseball, the Chicago White Sox, seven times. They have started the season 2-9, the worst record in the American League. They also have the lowest amount of runs scored in the American League and are currently on a seven-game losing streak. Chicago has struggled since their disastrous 2024 campaign when they accumulated a 41-121 record.

After four games in Chicago, the team will travel down to Florida to play the Tampa Bay Rays, who also sit at 5-6; however, the Rays are currently one of the better defensive teams in the entire league, having only allowed 36 runs against them through the first 11 games to start the season. This series will be a tough test for the Red Sox offense, but the games against Chicago should be attainable for them.

Red Sox Must Do Well During This Stretch

If the Sox can gain at least 5-6 wins against the worst team in the league while at least splitting their series against the Rays, the team will be in an excellent position within the division. They'll need those wins to catch up with the Yankees and the Blue Jays. Hopefully, the team will also use the time to improve their defense, which threatens to be the team's Achilles heel. The teams will also need to regain their hot offense, which is beginning to show itself to be very hot and cold.

If the team's inconsistent play lingers on, it is quite possible that their play will resemble the same kind of .500 baseball that prevented the team from making the playoffs last year. The Red Sox have an excellent opportunity to assert themselves within the American League. They just need to win the majority of their games against one of the worst teams in the league over the next two weeks.
