Boston Red Sox Ownership’s Ego Got In Way Of Teams Success

With the Chicago Cubs and Cleveland Indians playing game one of the World Series tomorrow night at Progressive Field, the number one story line for the Red Sox is the fact that more than a few former Boston Red Sox are a part of both organizations.

Cleveland Indians

The Cleveland Indians currently have four former Red Sox on their roster with the most notable being Andrew Miller. In 2014 the Red Sox traded him to the Baltimore Orioles and that off-season he signed with the New York Yankees for 4 years/ $36 million dollars.

More from Boston Red Sox

Since then he has been one of the most reliable relievers in major league baseball and in this postseason he has just been absolutely filthy.

After that you have Mike Napoli, Coco Crisp and Michael Martinez. Mike Napoli won the World Series with the Red Sox in 2013 as you know so he knows how to win. Coco Crisp hit the game winning RBI in game 3 of the ALDS this year.

Then there is Michael Martinez who was with the Red Sox earlier this year for like four days and cost them a game on July 23rd when he miss played a fly ball in right field that led to 5 runs and an ultimate loss.

The most notable former Red Sox with the Indians is the manager Terry Francona. He won 2 World Series with the Red Sox and made the postseason in five of the eight seasons with the Red Sox but he was let go as manager after the collapse in September 2011. Since then he has brought the Indians to the postseason twice.

The Red Sox have been twice too but that includes 3 last place finishes and a fluke of a World Series. He has shown he is a great in game manager, something John Farrell has shown he is bad at.

Chicago Cubs

The Curse of the Billy Goat might be broken this year. A team put together by Theo Epstein and Jed Hoyer. Those are the same two guys that broke the Curse of the Great Bambino in Boston. They are two guys that know how to put a team together and they could have still been in the Red Sox front office.

Then there’s my favorite Chicago Cub, Jon Lester. He signed a 6 year $155 million dollar contract before the 2015 season. Since then, he has been a fantastic pitcher on the north side of Chicago, especially in the postseason.

Dysfunction in the Red Sox front office

The point I’m trying to make is that the Red Sox front office has put themselves in a horrible situation by letting go of so many great pieces because changing of heart and a pissing contest between people in the front office.

In 2011, the Red Sox imploded in September and the team used Francona as the scapegoat to the season. They also let Theo Epstein leave that offseason to go to the Cubs because he wanted to be in charge of baseball operations with Boston but they wouldn’t let him because of Larry Lucchino. Theo grew up a Red Sox fan and he left because they wouldn’t let the baseball guy do his job.

Then there’s Jon Lester. He was 30 years old when he signed a 6 year $155 million dollar contract with the Cubs. The Red Sox went 6 years $135 million. They had a rule against big contracts for pitchers over 30. The following year they went 7 years $217 million for David Price. A guy who has seriously struggled in the postseason. Jon Lester might be a hall of famer based on his postseason performances.

Boston overplayed their hand with Lester with their 4 year, $70 million dollar contract offer in the spring of 2014, which pretty much led to the end of Lester in a Red Sox uniform. Theo left because Larry wouldn’t let him take control of baseball ops.

The entire organization has been put into a horrible situation because of ego and that’s it. The Cubs are 4 wins away from 2 former guys in the Red Sox organization becoming hall of famers, and they left because of the dysfunction in the front office on Yawkey way.
