The 2013 season was a unique season for the New England Patriots, they saw the departure of their star wide receiver Wes Welker move to Denver along with longtime rival quarterback Peyton Manning. The move forced the Patriots to relay on other wide receivers including Julian Edelman, Danny Amendola and tight end Rob Gronkowski.

The Patriots suffered yet another loss at the early stage of the 2013 season when starting nose tackle Vince Wilfork tore his Achilles heel during a Sunday Night Football game against the Atlanta Falcons. The loss of Wilfork on the field was devastating, but his leadership and in-game coaching was not missed as he remained on the sidelines throughout the regular season.
