New England Patriots running back Dion Lewis is making some progress, but is it enough progress to return to the field this season?

The most intriguing question facing the New England Patriots as they enter the second half of the season is whether Dion Lewis will be activated.  And if so, when?

The shifty running back has been practicing for almost two weeks since returning from an ACL tear.  The Patriots will have until Nov. 17 to activate him to the active roster, or return him to injured reserve.  Since the offense is solid without Lewis, the team certainly won’t take any risks in activating him if they don’t feel he is ready.  But if they do, he could return as soon as this week against the Seahawks or the following week against the 49ers.

Of course, one man will make that decision.  In an appearance on the Dale & Holley with Thornton radio show on Monday, head coach Bill Belichick gave an update on Lewis.

"“He practiced last week, expect to practice him again this week,” Belichick said via WEEI. “I think he’s making progress every day. We’ll just evaluate and see how it goes. He hasn’t played football in almost a year, so training is one thing, but actually getting out there with 21 other guys on the field is another. That’s something we can’t simulate. All we can do is actually do it and see how it progresses, but I think he’s making progress.”"

The New England Patriots will have until Saturday to activate him for Sunday night’s matchup against Seattle.

Practice squad moves:  The Patriots announced two practice squad moves on Monday.  According to Patriots.com, the team has signed linebacker Trevor Bates to the practice squad.

The 23-year-old linebacker was a seventh-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in the 2016 NFL Draft.  At 6-foot-2, 247 pounds, Bates appeared in his first NFL game on Oct. 5, but was released by the Colts on Oct. 13

To make room for Bates, the Patriots have once against released fullback Glenn Gronkowski.  The younger Gronkowski was on his second stint on the Patriots practice squad.
