Boston Red Sox: Fister and Lin added to roster, Rutledge to DL
On Saturday the Boston Red Sox made a number of roster moves, calling up Doug Fister and Tzu-Wei Lin while Rutledge was placed on the DL.
The Boston Red Sox have been a revolving door at the back end of the starting rotation in 2017. That will continue Sunday when Doug Fister gets the start.
Fister was officially called up to Boston on Saturday as the team made a number of moves. Injuries have also taken a toll on the Red Sox infield this season. Josh Rutledge has been placed on the 7-day disabled list with a concussion. Rutledge has been helping to replace Pablo Sandoval, who the Red Sox should just move on from completely.
The move to place Rutledge on the DL resulted in a call-up for infielder Tzu-Wei Lin. Lin skipped AAA ball and came to Boston directly from the AA club in Portland.
Who is Tzu-Wei Lin?
Lin is not the first option for Boston as Deven Marrero is still available as an infielder, but he will likely see some playing time. Lin is from Taiwan and he first signed a deal with the Red Sox in 2012. This season has been Lin’s best since that point. He’s hitting .302 with 5 long balls. While Lin won’t impress with his bat, he will with his glove.
Lin is a traditional shortstop, but he has the ability to play anywhere in the infield. The organization has also experimented with giving him playing time in the outfield.
Brock Holt was added to the 60-day DL to make room for Lin on the 40-man roster.

Doug Fister to start on Sunday
The Red Sox will send Doug Fister to the mound for Sunday’s matchup with the Angels. Boston optioned Hector Velazquez to make room for Fister.
The righty was claimed off waivers from the Angels on Friday, but he was officially called up on Saturday. Fister did not throw for the major league club this season but he has pitched for the Angels AAA affiliate in Salt Lake. He made three starts and went 1-0 with a 4.02 ERA. Fister allowed 16 hits in 15.2 innings and struck out 10.
Fister spent time over his career with the Mariners, Tigers, Nationals, and Astros. He is 77-76 with a 3.60 ERA over his 8 year MLB career.
The Red Sox are currently in first place in the AL East, and they’ll aim to stay there even with a battered rotation and lineup. For now, the backups will have to do.
