Boston Bruins: Matt Duchene trade may hinge on Brandon Carlo
The Boston Bruins and Colorado Avalanche have been in trade talks for some time now, and it seems like the asking price is finally being revealed.
The Boston Bruins clearly have their eye on Matt Duchene of the Colorado Avalanche. The question now becomes just how much they’re willing to give up to land the star forward.
Reports indicate that Brandon Carlo is the piece that the Avs desire in a trade with the Bruins.
Colorado has been kicking the tires on a Duchene trade for nearly a year now, but things got ramped up yesterday when free agency began. The Columbus Blue Jackets, Nashville Predators, and Boston Bruins are the three teams that seem to make the most sense.
Aaron Portzline of the Columbus Dispatch has been all over this, and he believes Carlo is they key piece if Boston were to be involved.
The Avs clearly still have a high asking price for Duchene. For some time now it has seemed like Carlo would need to be involved in this deal, but when Portzline agrees, it’s probably true.

Realistically, I don’t think this is a trade that the Bruins will make. It doesn’t make sense to give up Carlo right now, as he’s showed a ton of potential moving forward. The Bruins do have Charlie McAvoy, but I’m in the group thinking that more young defenders are always a plus.
Duchene also doesn’t make much financial sense for Boston. The team currently has about $10-$13 million in cap space available, and Duchene carries a $6 million hit. He’s also only under contract for two seasons.
It’s not as if Duchene alone makes the Bruins contenders for the Stanley Cup, otherwise, this could be a no-brainer. I think Don Sweeney should continue his process of improving from within unless he can add an absolute superstar to compete in the NHL’s Eastern Conference.
