When it comes to history, New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady says comparing this year’s team to past teams is “unfair.”

Now that Tom Brady has joined Julian Edelman, Matthew Slater and others in calling a possible New England Patriots 19-0 season ridiculous, we can all put it to rest, right?

Probably not.

As fans, we shouldn’t have to.  I mean look at this team.  They are deep, they are focused and they are the defending Super Bowl champions.  Defending a championship, however, may be the main reason they won’t go undefeated.

Otherwise, if this team wants to accomplish that feat, they may have a chance.  It would give Brady and Bill Belichick something to accomplish that they haven’t already.  But there is no way Brady will admit that.

Unfair to compare

In fact, he feels any comparison to that 18-1 2007 team or any of the five Super Bowl championship teams is unfair.

Why?

Because there is a lot of work to do and a lot to prove.

"“It’s so far from those types of things,” Brady said in appearance on WEEI’s Kirk can Callahan Tuesday morning.  “I mean, you’re talking about some incredible teams that I’ve had an opportunity to be on very lucky to be on.  This team is so far from where we need to be.  We have so far to go.”"

Indeed they do, but at this point in the preseason the team is still further ahead than most teams.  With returning players like Edelman, Danny Amendola, Chris Hogan, a healthy Rob Gronkowski, Dion Lewis, James White to go along with newcomers like Brandin Cooks, Mike Gillislee, Dwayne Allen and Rex Burkhead, it’s hard not to get excited about the offense.

In drawing comparisons, this team may actually be a more talented group overall than that 2007 team.  The quarterback is the same, if not more elusive, and the only player that would rank above any of the receivers on this year’s team is Randy Moss.  One could argue the presence of Gronkowski offsets that, along with the speed of Cooks.

But, Brady is right.  It really is unfair to draw comparisons since many of those players have yet to play in a New England Patriots uniform.  The undefeated talk also puts a lot of pressure on the team, as if there wasn’t enough already.

"“It’s really unfair to set expectations,” Brady continued.  “It’s really a setup – for this team, we need to be focused on so many other things than what people may think about us or say about us.  There’s so much improvement we need to make. We’ll be able to write our own chapter.  Hopefully it’s a good one.”"

The only thing I disagree with there is the focused part.  This team will be focused and well prepared for any game on the schedule.  That’s what has made them so successful and what makes Bill Belichick the coach he is.

In saying all that he said, Tom Brady at least acknowledged the possibility is there, but in no way should it be an expectation.
