Boston Red Sox add Tony La Russa to the organization
The Boston Red Sox have added a great baseball mind in Tony La Russa to the organization. He’ll have some role in the front office with Dave Dombrowski.
It’s not known what his exact role will be, but longtime manager Tony La Russa is expected to join the Boston Red Sox in the front office according to the Boston Herald.
La Russa was an MLB manager for 33 seasons with the White Sox, Athletics, and Cardinals. He was the manager in St. Louis when the Red Sox won the World Series there in 2004. Over his managerial career, La Russa had a record of 2,728-2,365 with 6 League Pennants and 3 World Series Championships. He is third all-time in wins as a manager behind only John McGraw of the New York Giants and Connie Mack of the Philadelphia Athletics. So, in modern times, he’s the best MLB manager along with Joe Torre. He was elected to the Baseball Hall of Fame unanimously in 2014.
After retiring from managing after the 2011 season, La Russa accepted a position in the league office to assist Joe Torre, the executive vice president for MLB operations. In 2014, the Arizona Diamondbacks made him their chief baseball officer. Now, after 4 seasons in that role, La Russa will come to Boston. He made it clear that he wasn’t done working in baseball when he left Arizona.
"“I’m not gonna sit home,” he told the Arizona Republic. “I’m gonna do something.”"

The Boston Red Sox will officially announce the news later on Thursday, and we will get some more clarity to what La Russa’s role will be at that time. I would expect him to have a similar role as he did with the Diamondbacks, and the Red Sox are simply stacking a ton of baseball minds together to try to deliver a championship to Boston. Alex Cora, who just won the World Series as the Astros bench coach, will soon be on his way to manage the team. Former catcher Jason Varitek is still an assistant in the front office even though I want him to move to the diamond, and Dave Dombrowski is still at the helm. So far with Boston, I think Dombrowski has made all the right moves to get the Red Sox in a position to win now and in the future.

Having Tony La Russa nearby should be very helpful for Cora as a brand new MLB manager. Though it may not be often, it will be nice for him to be able to ask for advice in certain situations from one of the all-time greats. La Russa is the type of guy that every franchise should want to have around.
