It is only May, but ESPN is already predicting that the New England Patriots are the favorites to win the Super Bowl.

Now this is why it is great to be a fan of the New England Patriots. No matter what goes on in the offseason you can pencil the Patriots in for 12 wins and a trip to the big game in February.

ESPN and their “Football Power Index” believe that the Pats will be back in the Super Bowl this season. According to the worldwide leader, the Patriots have an 18% chance to win Super Bowl 53.

I can’t say that this is surprising. When you have the greatest Quarterback to ever play the game you are going to have a good season. The Patriots also have Rob Gronkowski returning which means Tom Brady will have someone to throw it to in the red zone.

Even with the loss of Brandin Cooks, the Patriots wide receiving corps will be coming back better than ever. The Patriots will have a well rested and fully healthy Julien Edelman and Malcolm Mitchell will probably be Brady’s 3rd option. The Patriots also drafted what looks to be another great slot receiver in Braxton Berrios.

On the defensive side, Dont’a Hightower will be leading the defense after an injury-riddled 2017 and also Jason McCourty will be on the opposite side of Stephon Gilmore and will have twin brother Devin protecting him over the top.

A possible rematch?

Another interesting takeaway from ESPN’s predictions is that the most likely matchup is a rematch of Super Bowl 52. Now personally I would love to see this.

The Philadelphia Eagles knocked the Patriots down a peg. Confidence was through the roof in New England prior to the game, but the Patriots came away empty handed.  This caused some people to attack the Patriots such as Lane Johnson’s petty shots at the greatest franchise in football.

If ESPN’s prediction comes true I would expect the Patriots to show the Eagles who the true champs are.

The season is a 100 days from now and once again the New England Patriots will most likely win the Lombardi trophy.
