He may not have won the Calder Trophy, but Boston Bruins defenseman Charlie McAvoy was named to the NHL’s Rookie All-Star team.

Charlie McAvoy proved in his first full season in the NHL that his effort in the 2017 playoffs wasn’t a fluke. He came out and continued to dominate on the Boston Bruins top defensive pairing. It seems McAvoy’s efforts were noticed by the rest of the NHL as he was named to the league’s Rookie All-Star team.

In 63 games McAvoy had 7 goals and 25 assists, but he isn’t just great in the opponent’s zone. McAvoy is a great defenseman who can lay the lumber. With the Bruins bevy of short defenseman, it is nice to have someone who can clear the crease or change the momentum of a game with a big hit.

McAvoy did have to miss some time, but fought through some difficult injuries and still played well. McAvoy was forced to miss time due to a heart problem, and then later in the season had to sit out due to a knee injury.

More from Chowder and Champions

In the playoffs, McAvoy was arguably the best defenseman on the ice. He had a goal and 4 assists and proved that he is one of the best on the powerplay. McAvoy can make great passes, and also sneak to the net and put one past the goalie.

A player to watch

McAvoy has the ability to become one of the best defensemen in the league. He focuses on all aspects of the game. he isn’t like Torey Krug whose mainly on the ice for his offense. McAvoy can do it all and do it well.
