The Boston Bruins may have lost out on Ilya Kovalchuk, but they are on to the next one as they have made John Tavares final list.

Man oh man. Boston Bruins fans are in for one interesting offseason. It started with the courting of Ilya Kovalchuk, but now the Bruins are going for the big one.

The rumors all started when Bruins GM Don Sweeney spoke about John Tavares at the draft on Saturday.

"“We’ve had a discussion on that front. I think that’s still a bit to be determined so I’m not going to comment on another player at this time, not able to.”"

Sweeney may have not giving out a lot of info, but what he did give out was ‘we definitely aren’t going to sit this one out.’ Sweeney could have easily said no, but that statement says it all.

Then on Sunday night things got a whole lot more interesting.

Woah.

More from Chowder and Champions

If the Bruins somehow landed Tavares they just become a major contender for the cup. Tavares is a top 10 player in the league. He has been stuck with the dreadful New York Islanders. If he came to Boston he would be apart of a winning team that has plenty of banners to prove so.

Tavares is a game changer. Last season he scored 37 goals and had 47 assists. He makes the Bruins top 2 lines the best in the league. The Bergeron line has to stay together, so Tavares would be playing on the “second” line.

The possible signing would present some challenges. The Bruins would have to clear some cap space fast. We have heard names like David Krejci and David Backes shopped around. They would need to find new homes fast. The Bruins risk selling one of these players too easily if they have the chance to lock up Tavares.

Also this means the Bruins will have issues signing any of their remaining free agents. They would have to take a major hometown discount to come back.

This is just the beginning and in no way does this mean the Bruins are going to land Tavares, but the possibility is there. Get your popcorn ready Bruins fans, this is going to be one interesting summer.
